Z3TA+ update – Cakewalk bring further new features to their excellent iOS synth

Download from iTunes App Storez3ta logoThere are some brilliant synth apps for iOS and, if there is one category of music app that is overflowing in its abundance, then this is it. Everyone will have their particular favourites depending upon the type of music they make and their personal preference for how complex (or not) they like their synth engines to be.

Amongst my own personal choices are Thor, Nave, Tera Synth and Arctic ProSynth but a particular favourite since its initial release back in February has been Cakewalk’s excellent Z3TA+. This has already had a couple of significant updates since it was originally released including the v.1.1 update that added a whole range of very welcome MIDI features.

Today, v.1.3 has arrived on the iTunes App Store. This also adds some useful new features particularly in the area of backup up and sharing of presets or for moving presets between the iOS version of the app and the equally good desktop version. The other interesting new additions are the ability to import user waves, MIDI arps and scala tuning files via iTunes File Sharing. Z3TA+ is already supplied with a huge collection of MIDI arp patterns but to be able to expand this further is very useful.

I tried the importing process with a suitable WAV files via iTunes. This worked well and when you next launch Z3TA+ you get a brief message saying that ‘X files have been imported’. Do note that any WAV files have to be fairly short (the manual suggests no bigger than 65536 samples) but, once you have a suitable file, these then become available for selection within the Oscillator’s Wave drop-down menu. If you want to add even further variety to the sounds you can create with Z3TA+ then this is a great additional option.

Once imported, you can use suitable WAV files as a sound source for the Z3TA+ oscillators.

Cakewalk’s Z3TA has, in one form or another, become a bit of a classic on the desktop and the iOS version is a brilliant port. This is a hugely impressive synth app and, with each update, Cakewalk are making it even better. Even priced at UK£13.99, this is a heck of a lot of synth at what is, in reality, a very modest price. Highly recommended.
