WOW Filterbox updated – Sugar Bytes bring Ableton Link to their flexible audio filter app

Download from iTunes App StoreWOW logoAs regular readers of the blog will be aware, I’m a self-confessed of a fan of Sugar Bytes and I use Turnado, Thesys, Egoist, Cyclop and Effectrix on a regular basis in my iOS music making. I also own a number of these in their desktop formats and, again, they get regular use.

Sugar Bytes other iOS port of one of their desktop plugins is WOW Filterbox and I reviewed this  when the iOS version was first released. While this app doesn’t perhaps get the headlines that some of the others sometimes generate, for dedicated filter effects (and rather like Filtatron), it offers plenty of real-time user control. Like most of Sugar Bytes audio processing options, it is perhaps not for the faint of heart – it’s very much intended to be in-your-face rather than subtle – so it won’t suit everyone. However, if electronic music production is your thing and you like your audio with lots of obvious ear candy, then WOW is a brilliant tool to have to hand.

WOW Filterbox - Sugar Bytes really do know a thing or two about creative effects.

Anyway, WOW received its first update in almost a year as v.2.2.0 arrived n the App Store yesterday. And, as with Effectrix and Turnado recently, the highlight new feature for this update of WOW is the addition of support for Ableton Link. This is great to see (and hear) and it makes it that much easier to get your WOW-based filter effects in sync with everything else going on in your project.

Yay! Ableton Link in WOW Filterbox !

Having given the update a quick spin via IAA within AUM this morning, all seems to be in order with the Ableton Link support sync’ing WOW quite happily to tempo data set within Patterning (for example). If you have not tried WOW, then don’t let a bit of a specialist filter gem pass you by; this is seriously good stuff for a range of filter effects and offers some great options for real-tim control.

The Ableton Link support seemed to work very well when tested via AUM. This was a particularly mad combination... but all nicely in sync :-)

WOW Filterbox is priced at UK£10.99/US$14.99. Nope, not the cheapest of iOS effect apps you might ever buy but it is powerful, flexible, creative and sounds great – just check out the original review, watch the video embedded below for a short demo…  and then hit the download button to find out more. If you like to manipulate your audio in weird and wonderful ways, this is a tool well worth having around.

I didn’t realise how crazy this was until I looked up a demo on YouTube that showed the step sequencer and envelope follower going utterly crazy etc! This thing is completely insane and ridiculously powerful (like all sugar bytes software) and is now on my radar (thanks John)! I think I might treat myself to some sugar bytes goodness for xmas after your articles these past few days! :)

      • Hi ConfusedKitten…. SB make some absolutely great stuff…. It’s perhaps not for the faint of heart though – deep and takes some mastering – or perhaps for the poor of eyesight given just how much is crammed into the screen :-) But the sounds great and hugely creative in an electronic music making context…. best wishes, John
