Unique launched – Sugar Bytes bring their popular desktop synth to iOS

Download from iTunes App StoreAs regular readers of the blog will be aware, I’m a self-confessed of a fan of Sugar Bytes and I use Turnado, Thesys, Egoist, Cyclop and Effectrix on a regular basis in my iOS music making. I also own a number of these in their desktop formats and, again, they get regular use.

Most of the iOS app are ports of desktop-based software and there are still a number of candidates that Sugar Bytes could give the same treatment too. Which is exactly what they have done with the launch of Unique that appeared in both iPad and iPhone versions on the App Store yesterday. The desktop version has been around for 7 or 8 years….   but it is still a very cool sounding synth, has a feature set that is flexible (in terms of sound design) but not too intimidating (in terms of programming).

Unique – another dose of Sugar Bytes inspired sound for iOS.

Anyway, the iOS UI is considerably more polished than the original desktop livery and there are custom versions for iPad and iPhone that accommodate the different screen real-estate available. Perhaps one of the synth’s most interesting features is the filter which includes vowel options amongst it’s various modes and can create some very interesting sounds.

The app ships with an extensive set of preset sounds to get you started.

The app ships with 300 presets, Ableton Link, Audiobus, MIDI Learn, MIDI automation (from a suitable host) and is a 30MB download. It requires iOS9.0 or later. The iPad version is priced at UK£14.99/US$14.99 while the iPhone version – which seems on paper to have an identical specification – is just UK£4.99/US$4.99. A full review will, of course, follow shortly as soon as I’ve had a chance to dig in.

The spec includes effects options as well as an interesting synth engine to explore.

Until then, check out the old video of the desktop original below for more information (although, hopefully, Sugar Bytes will make an up-to-date demo of the iOS versions available soon) and then hit the download buttons to find out more via the App Store :-)

    1. This does have nice mellow sounds, even if they do remind me of something at the back of Keith Emerson’s wardrobe! Price, while great for keyboard players, is a bit steep for mere dabblers. So will watch for a sale.
