Laplace update – resonator synth from developer iceGear follows Redshrike

There are, of course, no shortages of iOS music apps that offer virtual synthesis and we are blessed with some fabulous synth apps that run on the iPad (and a number that also work in the more compact iPhone format)…. However, there are a number of very creditable alternatives to some of the more profile and well established competition and one such synth is Laplace, a resonator-based iOS synth app that I originally reviewed back in December 2014. iceGear/iceWorks have continued to developer … [Read more...]

Syndt giveaway results – five winners of Klevgränd’s new polyphonic synth

Klevgränd Produktion launched their latest iOS music app - Syndt - just a week or so ago and I did a full review of the app here on the Music App Blog. Syndt is another addition to the streamlined instrument options with their 'Kanvas' UI backdrop. It features an polyphonic synth engine and, for a Klevgränd app at least, quite a few controls that are actually spread over three (yes, three!) screens :-) As with all their recent releases, Syndt is delivered in formats for desktop (AU, VST) and … [Read more...]

Redshrike updated – iceWorks iPhone-friendly synth goes universal and AU

There are, of course, no shortages of iOS music apps that offer virtual synthesis and we are blessed with some fabulous synth apps that run on the iPad. While most iOS musicians will have a number of the obvious candidates installed on their iPads, there are plenty of very creditable alternatives to some of the more profile and well-established competition. A few of these slightly left-of-centre options are Lorentz, Laplace and Mersenne from iceGear/iceWorks. All of these synths are slightly … [Read more...]

Syndt review – Klevgränd add a new polyphonic synth to their ‘Kanvas’ iOS music app collection

I've reviewed a number of iOS music apps from Klevgränd Produktion here on the blog over the last year or two - Vandelay, Squashit, Svep, Roverb, Enkl, Weeel, Korvpressor, PressIt,  Esspresso, Jussi, Haaze, Pads and Baervvag amongst others. A number of these are also available in an AU plugin format for these working on an OSX desktop system and Klevgränd took a pretty bold step a few months ago when the also added AU support under iOS; it was great to see... and, in every case, I've been … [Read more...]

Scythe update – iOS synth from Plastaq Software gets further tweaks

I reviewed Scythe from Plastaq Software here on the blog back in March 2015. Scythe is an iPad only app and that now requires iOS9.3 or later. At 3MB, it’s a download that ought to fit even on a well-stocked device. The app includes Audiobus support, IAA support (as an audio generator) and seems happy enough to receive MIDI from other sources such as a sequencer app or an external MIDI keyboard. Scythe is not the deepest iOS synth app you can find on the App Store, however, it is very capable … [Read more...]

Layr giveaway results – two winners of Living Memory Software’s excellent multi-timbral synth app

If you are an iOS music maker with a bit of a synth habit, then you will already be well aware of Living Memory's new iOS mega-synth Layr. The app was released a couple of weeks ago and has been widely praised and, I suspect, helped to brake more than a few 'I don't need any more iOS synths' promises that folks had made to themselves. I reviewed the app a week or so ago here on the Music App Blog....  and, in short, the potential is obvious and, as the demo videos suggest, this is an app can … [Read more...]

Layr review – Living Memory Software launch impressive multi-timbral synth app for iOS

Long-standing Music App Blog visitors might well recall that I reviewed Ostinator – a sort of app-based emulation of a hardware looper pedal (and, in concept, not unlike an app such as Quantiloop) – and released by Living Memory Software. Ostinator is a cool little app and, because of its key function, perhaps attracted most attention from iOS-using guitar players. However, as I posted on Friday, Living Memory are now back with a new app – Layr - and, this time around, it is most definitely … [Read more...]
