iOS music apps – toys or tools?

I'd like to start with a question and, while I admit the link to iOS music apps might not be obvious to start with, bear with and I'll do my best to convince you that I can join the dots... So, my question…. has anyone here ever played Guitar Hero? For a while a few years ago it was all the rage on consoles such as the PS3 and the Wii. Indeed, my own sons (then aged about 10 and 3) were both hooked and we had the full setup for the family Wii; two guitars, a drum kit and a mic. The kids … [Read more...]

Beatmaker 2 by Intua – music app review

Intua’s Beatmaker music app has been around for quite a while. The original version was released as an iPhone app as far back as 2008 and Beatmaker 2 first appeared in February 2011 – for both iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad – and has seen regular upgrades since. In terms of music making, Beatmaker has always been designed to be a complete (stand alone?) compositional environment. The original tools consisted of sample-based drum machine and keyboard instruments, a well-specified sequencing … [Read more...]

Figure music app gets aboard the Audiobus

If you read my original review of Propelerhead’s Figure music app you will know that I’m a bit of a fan. It’s not that the app is a fully featured music production system – it’s far from it in fact – but it was one of the best examples of an app designer thinking outside the box in terms of the playing interface. In short, Propellerhead made brilliant use of the touchscreen to provide an instrument that a novice musician could coax a dance tune out of and a more serious musician could dig into. … [Read more...]

NanoStudio from Blip Interactive – music app review

Garageband aside, at the time of writing, there is probably one other iDevice music app that has built itself a substantial following – Blip Interactive’s NanoStudio. While the next few months will undoubtedly bring a slew of new options, the app was one of the first serious virtual recording environments for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and, as such, established itself an early foothold. Of course, there are now a lot of other recording/music composition tools available, so is NanoStudio … [Read more...]

Music app review – Figure by Propellerheads

If you are into the creation of synth-based dance music the odds are that, at some stage, you will have explored Propellerheads Reason software on the Mac or PC. Reason features some fabulous software synths, samplers, drum machines and effects so it has always been an excellent environment for electronic music producers. In the last couple of years, Propellerheads have added audio recording (initially via their Record software and now embedded directly within Reason itself) so Reason now … [Read more...]

GarageBand for iPad – music app review

If you are a musician with a smartphone or tablet device, there is an abundance of music apps to tempt you. However, for Apple device owners, one such app is difficult to miss – GarageBand. For Mac users, GarageBand has been around for some time, making up one third of the ‘creative’ iLife suite that also includes iMovie and iPhoto. On the Mac, all three programs are highly regarded but perhaps considered more consumer-level than ‘pro’ in nature – in essence, a stepping stone from which novice … [Read more...]
