Midiflow update – MIDI utility app from Johannes Doerr gets further tweaks

I love my collection of iOS synths, guitar amp modellers and audio effects but, while ‘exciting’ might not be the word to describe them, I’m also glad I’ve got access to a number of very useful ‘music utility’ apps that I use on a regular basis. One of these Midiflow which I've reviewed previously here on the Music App Blog. Developer Jonannes Dorr first launched the app back in June 2014 but there had been a fairly regular stream of updates since then (suggesting a pretty active development … [Read more...]

LINK to MIDI review – Alexandernaut delivers a useful iOS music utility app

Regular iOS musicians will be familiar with Arpeggionome and Fugue Machine from developer Alexandernaut. However, a few days ago, a new app appeared – LINK to MIDI - and, if you are the kind of musician (iOS or otherwise) who likes to link all your MIDI kit together and getting it playing in sync, then it might well be of interest. As implied by the app’s title, LINK to MIDI attempts to provide a bridge between Ableton’s new LINK technology and the older, more widely used (but, under iOS, … [Read more...]

Midiflow review – MIDI utility app for iOS from Johannes Doerr

I love my collection of iOS synths, guitar amp modellers and audio effects but, while ‘exciting’ might not be the word to describe them, I’m also glad I’ve got access to a number of very useful ‘music utility’ apps that I use on a regular basis. One of these is MidiBridge by Audeonic Apps (Nic Grant’s app home and where MidiBus and, in part, Music IO have come from). Given just how unpredictable MIDI can be under iOS, MidiBridge is an interesting app as it attempts to help you untangle your … [Read more...]

ChordPolyPad review – MIDI chord generator app from Laurent Colson

As I’ve confessed on these pages a number of times, my keyboard skills leave a lot to be desired. When you combine that with the rather slippery beast that is a touchscreen virtual piano keyboard, without a little help, the MIDI parts I create require rather more editing than a Wolf Of Wall Street cut designed for pre-school viewers - which is to say, too much editing given the state of the art for MIDI editing under iOS (best described as basic). All of which leads to my interest in apps … [Read more...]

Apollo review – MIDI over Bluetooth from Secret Base Design

Experienced iOS musicians will be familiar with Secret Base Design through their various music apps such as MIDImorphosis and VoxKit, both of which I’ve reviewed on the website. Patrick Madden – the person behind Secret Base Design – is now back with a new iOS app aimed at musicians; Apollo. Or, to give the app its full name, Apollo MIDI over Bluetooth… which pretty much tells you what to expect. Apollo (UK£1.99) is essentially a utility app that allows you to pass MIDI data between two iOS … [Read more...]
