AC Sabre update – interesting MIDI instrument and motion controller for iOS gets some tweaks

I was lucky enough to review the very interesting AC Sabre back in August.  The iTunes tag line describes the app as a ‘professional MIDI instrument and motion controller’. The emphasis is most certainly on the word ‘controller’ here; AC Sabre allows the user to use the touch screen and the motion sensitivity of an iOS device to generate all sorts of MIDI data. This data can be sent to an app (for example, a synth app or DAW/sequencer) running on the same device or, via Bluetooth or WiFi, that … [Read more...]

AC Sabre review – interesting MIDI instrument and motion controller for iOS

One of the things I love about iOS is that it has made accessible a number of interesting, creative and unique means by which an instrument can be ‘played’. And while there are undoubtedly elements of the iOS music making experience that do not yet compete with what’s possible on a desktop system, when it comes to delivering unconventional and novel ways to generate MIDI data, iOS has most certainly bought something new to the party. This has come in a variety of ways and I did a roundup … [Read more...]

Stompwatch updated – Secret Base Design add new features to their iOS music utility app

I reviewed both Secret Base Design’s Live Guitar and Stompwatch here on the Music App Blog over the last couple of weeks. Patrick Madden obviously likes to keep himself busy though because an update to Stompwatch appeared on the App Store over the weekend. Priced at just UK£3.99, Stompwatch is very good example of what Secret Base Design specialise in… no-nonsense utility apps for the iOS musician. In this case what we are being offered is a ‘virtual MIDI pedal board’ and, while this is … [Read more...]

Stompwatch review – Secret Base Design add another iOS music utility app to their lineup

I reviewed Secret Base Design’s significant update to their Live Guitar app a few days ago on the blog but Patrick Madden has obviously been keeping himself busy of late because a further app was launched on the app store last week also; Stompwatch. Priced at just UK£3.99, Stompwatch is another example of what Secret Base Design specialise in… no-nonsense utility apps for the iOS musician. In this case what we are being offered is a ‘virtual MIDI pedal board’ and, while this is perhaps not a … [Read more...]

Launch Control XL announced – Novation offer a new compact MIDI Controller

I always like to let the control freak within me loose when I'm doing some solo music making (it makes a nice change from the democracy of collaborative projects!).  While the iPad's touchscreen can provide a brilliant way to operate an iOS music app, as with a desktop computer mouse, it is not always the ideal means of interaction and, sometimes, physical controls are what you need. That's where a MIDI control surface can come in useful and, even its just a few knobs or trigger pads on a … [Read more...]

Chordion goes free – Olympia Noise Co’s brilliant MIDI performance tool currently free

As most regular Music App Blog readers will be aware, my keyboard skills are not going to win me any prizes. As a consequence, I'm always interested in the MIDI performance tools that appear and which exploit the iPad's touchscreen interface to provide an alternative to piano keys (real or virtual) as a means of generating a MIDI performance. There are a good few apps that fall into this category; Synthecaster, SoundPrism Pro+ and Gestrument, for example. However, perhaps my personal … [Read more...]

Launchkey 49 review – Novation’s MIDI controller keyboard for iPad

The iPad’s touchscreen is a wonderful thing and the virtual controls offered by many iOS music apps are a joy to use. However, there are plenty of occasions where some genuine hardware controls – piano keys, faders, rotary knobs or buttons – are either a better alternative to the touchscreen or can compliment the virtual interface of your favourite music apps. And, for most musicians, the most popular form that such a control surface takes is a MIDI controller keyboard. Novation’s Launchkey … [Read more...]
