iOS11 delivery day – more ‘stick or twist’ decisions for iOS musicians?

As I'm sure every iOS musician is aware, iOS11 is due to be released later today and, around 6pm UK time (adjust accordingly for your own time zone) it ought to be available to download for any of the iOS hardware that will support the new version. That pretty much means iPhone 5S, iPad Air, or iPod Touch 6th gen. or newer. For general use - whether that's on your iPhone or iPad - there is little reason not to update as iOS11 has some cool new features. The new drag and drop features for … [Read more...]

Thor update – Propellerhead bring OS and Audiobus tweaks to their flagship iOS synth

Regular readers here will know that I'm a bit of a fan of Propellerhead's Thor - the iOS port of the same synth that is a well-established part of the Reason desktop music production system. Indeed, Thor is amongst my favourite iOS synths to date. You can read the full review of Thor here but it is a powerful, deeply programmable virtual synth that is capable of a fabulous range of sounds. Whether used in a recording context or for live performance, this is big enough and bold enough to work … [Read more...]

DM1 update – Fingerlab adds some further tweaks to their iOS drum machine app

As I posted a while back, Fingerlab released a welcome update to their classic DM1 iOS drum machine app in January bringing the app to v.5.0. This addressed a fairly significant audio issue that many users had experienced under iOS8 but also introduced some other new features and fixes. As a long-term fan of the app, this update was great to see... and it has been followed up by a series of further updates including support for Audiobus Remote and a pretty substantial overall of the MIDI … [Read more...]

VocalizeU update – vocal training app by DS Vocology gets iOS9 tweaks

There are a number of useful vocal training iOS music apps available on the App Store including VocalizeU which I originally reviewed back in May 2012; this is, therefore, an app that has been around on the App Store for some time. It has had a number of updates since then but the key elements of the app's feature set and what it attempts to do remain the same (s0 check out the original review for the full details). As might be expected given the title, this is very much a vocal educational … [Read more...]

Animoog update – Moog Music’s classic synth app gets iOS9 support

While iOS music apps have only been with us for a few years, I think there are still a number of candidates that still deserve to be given a 'classic' status. One of those is undoubtedly Moog Music's Animoog. This iOS synth is available in both iPad (UK£18.99) and a streamlined iPhone version (UK£4.49) and, as a 35MB download, would find a home on even the most highly stuffed of iOS devices. As I reported a short while ago, Animoog got Audiobus Remote support in the v.2.2.8 update at the end … [Read more...]

DM1 update – Fingerlab re-work MIDI in their iOS drum machine app

I reviewed Fingerlab's DM1 drum machine app very early on in the life of the Music App Blog and it has remained one of my favourite 'classic drum machine' apps. As I posted a while back, Fingerlab released a welcome update in January bringing the app to v.5.0 and this addressed a fairly significant audio issue that many users had experienced under iOS8 but also introduced some other new features and fixes. There have been a few further updates since then including adding support for … [Read more...]

iOS9 updated – Apple apply the first round of additions to the latest version of iOS

As I'm sure every iOS musician is aware, iOS9 was released last week and is available to download for any of the iOS hardware that will support the new version. The sensible route was most certainly to stick with iOS8 for now if you happen to be an iOS music maker until the dust settles on the v.9 release and to let a few willing volunteers explore the brave new world on your behalf :-) Thankfully, while some users have most definitely hit snags (and not all music related), I think it would be … [Read more...]

iOS9 arrives – stick or twist for iOS musicians ?

As I'm sure every iOS musician is aware, iOS9 was released yesterday and is available to download for any of the iOS hardware that will support the new version. For general use - whether that's on your iPhone or iPad - there is little reason not to update as iOS9 has some cool new features. However, if you are using your iOS hardware for more than a bit of web browsing, email and media consumption - and perhaps running some rather more specialised apps as a consequence - a more cautious approach … [Read more...]
