Odessa becomes Rozeta – Bram Bos breaks new ground with AU MIDI tools

I originally put up this blog post a few days ago when Bram Bos launched his new Odessa app....   but I'm re-poting because, due to circumstances beyond Bram's control (there is a full explanation on his website), he has decided to give the app a new name; Odessa has now become Rozeta on the App Store....  In all other respects, the app remains the same....   Anyway, I've tweaked the post below to reflect the name change :-) In the UK, there is a cliche about public transport buses that you … [Read more...]

Audiobus 3 updated – Audiobus gets AUv3 fine-tuning

I posted a full review of Audiobus 3 when it was released at the beginning of April. As promised by the Audiobus team, the new version had three new headline features. First, the app provides MIDI routing between compatible apps, making it easier to configure your overall arrangement of apps within a specific Audiobus project. Second, Audiobus 3 supports Audio Unit plugins as well as Audiobus and IAA compatible apps. This is obviously an important development given that AU is now making … [Read more...]

AUM update – Jonatan Liljedahl’s brilliant iOS audio mixer app gets some iOS11 tweaks

There are some developers that qualify for almost universal hero worship amongst the iOS music making community and Jonatan Liljedahl is one of those. So, whether it is the ubiquitous utility app AudioShare, the truly inspiring (and sometimes mind bending) electronic rhythm/groove app Sector, or the minimalist audio effects of the AUFX series, Jonatan creates brilliant apps that almost any iOS musician would want to own. And, with perhaps his flagship iOS music app – AUM - he did it again; … [Read more...]

AudioShare update – iOS audio document manager gets new iOS11 features

Jonatan Liljedahl will be well know to almost every iOS musician through his brilliant AUM audio mixer/router app...  although there is also the long-standing AUFX series audio effects apps (and that would be great to see appear as AU effects at some stage?). Of course, he has also given up  his AudioShare utility app. I've never got around to doing a full review of AudioShare here on the blog, but it is the kind of tool that an iOS musician doesn't realises how useful it is to have around until … [Read more...]

FuxEQ review – Matthias Rath updates his 7-band EQ AU plugin for iOS11

While adoption of Apple’s Audio Unit (AU) plugin format has ben a bit of a slow burner under iOS, the last few months has really seen the format tack hold. Yes, we are still waiting to see some developers embrace the format (there remain some technical and financial issues I'm sure) but lots of iOS musicians are now working with the AU format, if not exclusively, then predominantly.   iOS11 is obviously the latest 'technical' hoop that developers are having to jump through....  but it … [Read more...]

ChordPolyPad update – Laurent Colson updates his powerful iOS MIDI performance app for iOS11

Virtual MIDI keyboards on a touchscreen are not to everyone's taste....  and, if your actual keyboard skills are a bit on the shaky side (like mine), then a MIDI performance app of some sort can be a very helpful alternative.... And, in that context, ChordPolyPad, which I did a full review of some time ago, is a very powerful tool. In essence, the app is very simple; you get multiple banks of trigger pads into which you can define any chord you like with full control over how that chord is … [Read more...]

Smart Click update – free metronome app from Steinberg gets iOS11 support

A 'utility app' group that is well stocked on the App Store is that of the metronome app. The humble metronome is an under-appreciated tool and, if you are serious about your musical instrument skills, some time spent practicing against a metronome can do wonders for the tightness of your playing, whether that's drums, guitar or any other instrument. As with tuners, there are some decent free metronome apps and also some very good low cost options...  but if you are looking for an option on … [Read more...]

Auria Pro update – WaveMachine Labs update their feature-packed iOS DAW/sequencer for iOS11

In reviewing Auria Pro when it was launched back in December 2015, I was hugely impressed with the ambition shown by WaveMachine Labs. In terms of the specification and feature list, this is perhaps the first iOS DAW/sequencer that crosses over into the capabilities of a fully-fledged desktop recording package.... No, perhaps not the top-end Logic Pro or Cubase Pro or the like, but certainly a feature set that matches the lower/middle ground of the desktop DAW/sequencer marketplace. Oh, and … [Read more...]

Mobile POD update – Line 6 tweak their iOS guitar rig sim for iOS11

If you have any interest in guitar-related technology then Line 6 will be a very familiar brand. I'm most certainly a fan having, over the last 15+ years, used their hardware guitar amp modellers, digital amps, desktop software and, now under iOS, their guitar amp/cab/effect modelling app Mobile POD. While the app itself is 'free', for much of its early life, you had to own a Line 6 Sonic Port (or the newer Sonic Port VX) to use Mobile POD. However, Line 6 did the sensible thing when they … [Read more...]
