Mitosynth update – hybrid iOS synth from Wooji Juice Ltd gets further fine-tuning

Wooji Juice's Mitosynth iOS music app has been with us for a couple of years now. I was very impressed with the app when I reviewed it just after it was released. Mitosynth looked great, sounded great (especially if you are into sound design and sound textures) and played nicely with other iOS music apps via Audiobus. It also provides a novel set of sound design tools that, while easy to use, provide a tremendous amount of flexibility for the keen programmer. It might not be my recommendation … [Read more...]

MiMix update – TTrGames tweak their Audiobus mixer utility app for Audiobus 3

I have to admit that, on first release, MiMix, from developer TTrGames, passed me by. However, when v.2.0 arrived on the App Store , I did play ‘catch up’ and gave the app a full review. MiMix has a tag line of ‘Mixer for Audiobus’ and this pretty much sums up its key function. Given that Audiobus 3 has just launched - and one of the key new features is the addition of basic mixing facilities directly within Audiobus - you might be forgiven for thinking MiMix might not have such an important … [Read more...]

Vatanator update – Georgi Georiev’s streamlined iOS drum machine gets new features

I’ve reviewed a whole range of different drum and groove apps for the blog over the last few years. These comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes and, within any iOS musician’s app collection, there is most certainly room for a number of these tools as, across the whole range, they offer different features, functions and approaches to working. One recent release in this category is Vatanator. This is the first app by developer Georgi Georgiev and I did a full review of the app on the blog a … [Read more...]

AudioTools update – Andrew Smith’s audio testing utility app new features

As regular readers here will be aware, my iOS weapon of choice when it comes to audio analysis is AudioTools from Andrew Smith. OK, so this isn't some sexy synth or creative multi-effects app. Indeed, as an audio testing utility, the only sound it makes and some pretty abstract test signals. However, if you care about the audio quality of the music you make using your iOS system, then - like acoustic treatment for your music making space - acoustic testing is well worth experimenting … [Read more...]

AudioTools update – Andrew Smith’s audio testing utility app new features

If you subscribe to the Music App Blog's weekly email newsletter, then you will know that around 12 months ago I completed a personal project studio build for my own music production work. To cut a long story short, this is a 'room within a room' built within a barn and, while on the inside, it looks like any 4x5m domestic room/office, it is pretty well sound isolated (yay! no noise gets in or out). Of course, like any room used for audio production, sound proofing (if required) doesn't mean … [Read more...]

Master FX update – multi-effects processor adds iOS10 support

I reviewed Igor Vasiliev's Master FX (UK£4.99/US$5.99) app when it was first released. The app provides an excellent range of standard audio effects/processors including parametric EQ, chorus, flanger, delay, reverb and a compressor. The level of control is comprehensive and, with Audiobus and IAA support, the app is also easy to use within a wider iOS workflow. There is no AU support as yet (that would be great to see at some point though) but this is a great tool for general recording … [Read more...]

Launchpad update – Novation add some visual tweaks to their loop-based music tool

I posted a full review of Novation's Launchpad when it was first released back in spring 2013. For those that like to mix and match loops as a creative music making option, Launchpad is a brilliant concept and, as the basic app is free to download, you can give it a try without having to make any commitment to a long term relationship. Novation have kept up a pretty good pace of updates with the app and it has gained new loop content (via IAPs) and also the ability to load your own samples … [Read more...]

Tessitura Pro update – sophisticated music theory app for iOS gets guitar-friendly

There are a good number of iOS music apps that could broadly fall into the ‘utility‘ category and I recently reviewed the relatively new app from Ariel Ramos’ mDecks Music development team - Tessitura Pro - which definitely falls into this category. Tessitua Pro offers a comprehensive environment within which to study and practice almost any aspect of scales and scale modes (and associated chords). This is perhaps an app more aimed at the serious music student rather than someone looking for … [Read more...]

Ruismaker update – refinements for compact iOS AUi drum machine plugin

We are beginning to see some positive signs on the AU plugin format. Progress has been slow but it is starting to take hold under iOS and I'm more than happy to lend a helping hand with what I think is important technology by promoting some of the excellent developers/apps that have already taken the plunge with AU. And, as I mentioned a couple of months ago, Ruismaker from developer Bram Bos was the first iOS drum machine app to appear in that format (closely followed by the equally good … [Read more...]
