Sunrizer update – BeepStreet’s classic iOS synth gets the 64-bit treatment

I’ve reviewed lots of iOS synth apps on the site over the last five years but, given this is a category of iOS music apps that is so well served, there are also plenty I’ve yet to cover. Some of these have, over time, achieved a sort of 'classic' status and one app that (for me at least) fits into that category is BeepStreet’s Sunrizer. Sunrizer is a virtual analog synth and, in part at least, attempts to model what’s known as the ‘SuperSaw’ sound engine that first appeared in one of Roland’s … [Read more...]

Shapesynth update – interesting poly synth from Erik Sigth gets some tweaks

If you have been addicted to the music app category of the App Store for any length of time then you may well have your fair share of iOS synths. I’ve a folder full of them on my own iPad and, while a good number get regular use, there are still plenty I’ve fully to capitalise upon… Some iOS synth heads will, of course, gravitate to the deeper end of the synth app pool - the area were the likes of zMors Modular (which was updated today) might inhabit - but others, those who are still wearing … [Read more...]

Shapesynth update – interesting poly synth from Erik Sigth gets some tweaks

If you have been addicted to the music app category of the App Store for any length of time then you may well have your fair share of iOS synths. I’ve a folder full of them on my own iPad and, while a good number get regular use, there are still plenty I’ve fully to capitalise upon… And, it would seem, still some interesting possibilities I’ve yet to discover. One such app that I only caught up with a few months ago is Shapesynth by Erik Sigth.  While the app has been around on the App Store … [Read more...]

Shapesynth review – strange, but rather beautiful, cheap-as-chips iOS synth

If you have been addicted to the music app category of the App Store for any length of time then you may well have your fair share of iOS synths. I’ve a folder full of them on my own iPad and, while a good number get regular use, there are still plenty I’ve fully to capitalise upon… And, it would seem, still some interesting possibilities I’ve yet to discover. One such app is Shapesynth by Erik Sigth and, while the app has been around on the App Store for a number of years, I have to admit … [Read more...]

Nave update – Waldorf bring iOS9 support to their flagship iOS synth

Waldorf's Nave is most definitely one of my favourite iOS synths (it appears in the Music App Blog '25 iOS music apps to get you started' guide) and I did a full review of the app when it was first released. It is a brilliant virtual synth with an amazing interface and some incredibly deep programming options. As the app also features Audiobus and IAA support, it is very easy to integrate it into a wider iOS music production workflow. Waldorf on not, however, one of the 'regular update' type … [Read more...]

Enkl review – Klevgränd Produktion add a monophonic synth to their excellent iOS music app catalogue

A couple of weeks ago I reviewed the excellent Cyclop from Sugar Bytes. Cyclop is a monophonic synth and is a port of Sugar Bytes desktop synth of the same name. Like all Sugar Bytes iOS music apps, Cyclop is brilliant and it sounds great. Also like Sugar Bytes other iOS music apps (and their software in general), it is most definitely left-of-centre and most definitely deep (or ‘busy’ depending upon your perspective on these things). I love Cyclop but I think my head is still spinning from … [Read more...]

Enkl launched – Klevgränd Produktion’s monophonic synth for iOS hits the App Store

As I posted a week or so ago, Klevgränd Produktion have been working on a new iOS music app called Enkl. As well as making rather excellent promotional videos for their recent releases, Johan Sundhage and Klevgränd Produktion also make pretty good iOs music apps - audio effects such as Vandelay, SquashIt, R0Verb and Svep and Weeel that is a MIDI utility app that provides you with a single X-Y control pad that can be used to generate MIDI pitch bend data and modulation wheel data. However, … [Read more...]

Audulus update – modular synthesis app from Subatomic Software goes to v.2.8

As any experienced iOS musician will be aware, like their desktop equivalents, software synths for iOS come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and serve different needs. At their most basic, you get what are essentially preset machines that offer a broad palette of sounds but little by way of user programmability (sample-based ‘synths’ that perhaps just offer a few tweaks; perfectly useable but maybe not very flexible). Perhaps more interesting – at least to those with a keener interest in … [Read more...]

Sunrizer sale – BeepStreet’s classic iOS synth at a bargain price for a limited time

I reviewed the iPad version of BeepStreet's excellent iOS music app Sunrizer a few weeks ago when it was updated to v.3.2. Sunrizer is a brilliant synth app and, at the asking price of UK£6.99 is most certainly worth investing in. However, if you don't currently own the iPad version (or the iPhone version come to that), providing you are quick, you can get the app for just UK£1.99 (70% off) for a limited time. For those unfamiliar with Sunrizer, it is a virtual analog synth and, in part at … [Read more...]
