Lorentz updated – iceWorks add AU support to their flexible iOS synth app

I reviewed Lorentz Polyphonic Synthesizer from developer iceWorks when it was first released. There is a lot to like about this synth. It combines a very easy price (currently UK£5.99/US$5.99) with equally easy programming and still manages to sound very good indeed. It also included Audiobus and IAA support from the off, a decent MIDI specification and Ableton Link support was added in an update about 12 months ago. The further update to the app arrived on the App Store today taking the app … [Read more...]

Mersenne updated – iceWorks add AU support and sale pricing for their iOS FM synth

There are, of course, no shortages of iOS music apps that offer virtual synthesis and we are blessed with some fabulous synth apps that run under iOS. Slightly left-of-centre options amongst this lot include the various offerings by iceWorks (iceGear) and include the likes of  Lorentz, Laplace and, more recently, Redshrike. The list also includes Mersenne which I reviewed some 15 months or so ago when it was first released. The synth engine offers two FM-based sound sources (Tone A and Tone … [Read more...]

Laplace update – resonator synth from developer iceGear follows Redshrike

There are, of course, no shortages of iOS music apps that offer virtual synthesis and we are blessed with some fabulous synth apps that run on the iPad (and a number that also work in the more compact iPhone format)…. However, there are a number of very creditable alternatives to some of the more profile and well established competition and one such synth is Laplace, a resonator-based iOS synth app that I originally reviewed back in December 2014. iceGear/iceWorks have continued to developer … [Read more...]

Redshrike updated – iceWorks iPhone-friendly synth goes universal and AU

There are, of course, no shortages of iOS music apps that offer virtual synthesis and we are blessed with some fabulous synth apps that run on the iPad. While most iOS musicians will have a number of the obvious candidates installed on their iPads, there are plenty of very creditable alternatives to some of the more profile and well-established competition. A few of these slightly left-of-centre options are Lorentz, Laplace and Mersenne from iceGear/iceWorks. All of these synths are slightly … [Read more...]

Thor, Nave, Animoog, iSEM, Tera Synth, Synthmaster Player, MitoSynth, iProphet, Model 15, ARP ODYSSEi, iWaveStation… well, add your own favourites to the list. However, there are a number of very creditable alternatives to some of the more profile and well established … [Read more...]

Drum Session launched – Derek Buddemeyer and Blue Mangoo collaborate on new iOS drum app

We are blessed with some excellent iOS drum app whether you want to create acoustic drum parts of rock/pop/indie styles or electronic drums for more.. well...  electronic music styles. Personally, I think the latter of these two categories is brilliantly served with apps that are just as good as the options available on the desktop. However, when it comes to the former, then virtual drummer software such as Toontrack's Superior Drummer (or the entry-level version EZ Drummer) or BFD from … [Read more...]
