Tonebridge review – practice tool with instant guitar tones and an AU twist

A couple of weeks ago, I posted an article in the 'less is more' series looking at whether Audio Units (AU) plugin support under iOS was far enough along its development path to be considered as all you might need. I put together my personal set of AU host (Cubasis in my case) plus a small selection of AU plugins - synths, drums, effects, etc. - that could form the basis of my iOS music making workflow. My conclusions - perhaps not surprising at this point in time - was that AU was nearly … [Read more...]

Guitar Gym updated – Leafcutter Studios expand on David Mead’s guitar workout app

Way back in the mists of Music App Blog time (OK, 2013 to be a bit more precise), I reviewed David Mead's Guitar Gym app from developer Leafcutter Studios. I can’t speak for the USA or other parts of the world but, if you are a student of the guitar in the UK then I expect you will have heard of David Mead. As well as writing for two of the UK’s leading guitar magazine – Guitarist and Guitar Techniques – David has produced a number of excellent guitar tutor books. Compared to when I first … [Read more...]

Guitar Toolkit updated – tweaks for Agile Partners’ Swiss Army knife app for guitar players

As a confirmed iOS music app addict, I have far too many music apps installed on my iPhone and iPad. They are all great and there are occasions when each of them might get called into service. However, there are a few apps that I can pretty much guarantee using every day. For me, Cubasis is one...  but another is Agile Partners' Guitar Toolkit. Guitar Toolkit was one of the first iOS music apps I reviewed on the website back in April 2012. It might not be the most sexy of the apps I own but, … [Read more...]

iRig HD 2 review – IK Multimedia raise the iOS guitar interface bar

At times, IK Multimedia have had their share of detractors amongst the iOS music making community (most notably for their use of in-app ads but, thankfully, this is criticism they have responded to) but they are certainly a company that has embraced the iOS platform full-on. The R&D costs of developing software for a relatively new platform are considerable yet IKM have produced a number of very creditable music apps, AmpliTube, SampleTank, VocaLive, iGrand and iLectric amongst them. … [Read more...]

Guitar Lick Master review – learn some new lead guitar lick ideas thanks to Ninebuzz Software

For all the excitement that a new synth app reviews or audio effects app reviews might bring, as a musician who does the occasional bit of teaching, it's difficult not to be impressed by the tutorial and educational iOS music apps that also lurk within the iTunes App Store if you go looking for them. I've looked at a few of these here on the blog and, as someone who is predominately a guitar player, I am somewhat jealous of the huge range and impressive quality of the 'teach yourself guitar' … [Read more...]

If you are not familiar with the iFretless series of apps... well... er...  you probably should be. iFretless Bass is something of an iOS music app classic while iFretless Sax, iFretless Guitar and iFretless Brass take the key elements of the same excellent touchscreen performance interface and provide some of the most playable and expressive sample-based virtual instruments that are currently available for iOS. All of the apps include MIDI, IAA and Audiobus support, are universal and will … [Read more...]

iFretless updates – Bass and Sax apps join Guitar with iOS8 support

As I posted a couple of days ago, Blue Mangoo have just updated their excellent iFretless Guitar virtual instrument app to provide support for iOS8 and the lastest Audiobus SDK. As expected, hot on the heels of the Guitar app comes similar iOS8 compatibility updates for the other iFretless apps - iFretless Bass and iFretless Sax - both of which are now available for download via the App Store. Bass - the original app in this series - is still one of the best virtual instruments for bass … [Read more...]
