GarageBand update – Apple bring ‘free’ status to their iOS DAW/sequencer

While I'm more than happy to recommend recording apps such as Cubasis, Auria Pro or Gadget to more experienced iOS musicians, if you are just taking your first steps with the platform (and particularly if it represents your first serious encounter with recording/music technology in any form), Apple's GarageBand for iOS is actually pretty hard to beat. Even if you just use it as an audio sketchpad, it would be worth the price of entry and, if you also happen to use GarageBand or Logic Pro X on … [Read more...]

Seeing (RED) – iOS music apps support a worthy cause

While it is very easy to take a pop at some of the larger business structures that seem to run our world, it is always great when they get behind what is obviously a good cause. This week, Apple are making a big effort in support of (RED), the organisation founded by Bono and Bobby Shriver back in 2006 and aimed at supporting the fight against AIDS. To highlight World AIDS Day, both Apple, and a number of App developers, are selling (RED) branded versions of their apps - or IAPs within the … [Read more...]

Garageband update – more tracks and inter app audio support added

With my geeky ‘Apple fan’ hat on, I sat and watched the live stream of the keynote launch event yesterday (October 22nd , 2013) mainly to get details of the new iPad (iPad 5th gen. or iPad Air as we now find out it has been named) and to see just how scary the pricing of the new Mac Pro was going to be (answer; very scary but the spec. does look pretty awesome if you can justify needing it). One rather nice surprise during the event was the updates announced for all the iWorks and iLife … [Read more...]

The question is, however, which of these DAW apps is right for you? While I've no intention of making this a comprehensive list, here's a quick roundup of some of the contenders that would be on my personal … [Read more...]

Yep, this is going to be a review of the Samson Meteor USB mic, but first, let’s consider just a little bit of context as this helps identify which iOS musicians might find this mic most appealing …. My generation While it is perfectly possible for experienced music technology professionals to identify the current limitations of iOS as a music making platform, for a whole new generation of musicians, their iPhones, iPod Touch or iPad is their first close encounter with hi-tech music creation. … [Read more...]
