NFM update – new iOS FM synth app with AU support gets some tweaks

I posted a full review of NFM - a well=featured FM-based synth with AU support by developer Nikolozi Meladze - recently on the Music App Blog. Regular iOS music makers will also recall the review of Niko's NS1 synth back in February of 2016. NS1 was (still is; it's been regularly updated since launch) a very solid virtual analog synth instrument with some very cool sounds and, while programmable by the user, the control set was not so complex that synth newbies would find it too … [Read more...]

NFM review – new iOS FM synth app with AU support from NS1 developer

I reviewed Nikolozi Meladze’s NS1 synth back in February of 2016 as it was released. NS1 was (still is; it's been regularly updated since launch) a very solid virtual analog synth instrument with some very cool sounds and, while programmable by the user, the control set was not so complex that synth newbies would find it too intimidating. Of course, the other key element for NS1 which, at the time it was launched, was novel was that it was designed with AU support from the ground up. Indeed, … [Read more...]

Baervaag review – Klevgränd add an FM synth to their iOS AU instruments collection

I've reviewed a number of iOS music apps from Klevgränd Produktion here on the blog over the last year or two - Vandelay, Squashit, Svep, Roverb, Enkl, Weeel, Korvpressor, PressIt,  Esspresso, Jussi, Haaze and Pads. A number of these are also available in an AU plugin format for these working on an OSX desktop system and Klevgränd took a pretty bold step a few months ago when the also added AU support under iOS; it was great to see... and, in every case, I've been hugely impressed with the … [Read more...]

Phasemaker update – Bram Bos tweaks his AU-friendly FM synth

I reviewed Bram Bos' new Phasemaker iOS synth app here on the Music App Blog just after it was released. It's a brilliant little synth inspired by the FM synth engines of the 1980s (such as the classic DX7) but with a few modern twists thrown in for good measure. And, in iOS terms, the other modern twist in the original release was that the app supports the AU plugin format, although it can also run as a stand-alone app, via Audiobus or IAA (the later two added in a subsequent update). While … [Read more...]

Phasemaker update – Bram Bos adds Audiobus support to his FM synth

I reviewed Bram Bos' new Phasemaker iOS synth app here on the Music App Blog just a few weeks ago. It's a brilliant little synth inspired by the FM synth engines of the 1980s (such as the classic DX7) but with a few modern twists thrown in for good measure. And, in iOS terms, the other modern twist in the original release was that the app supports the AU plugin format, although it can also run as a stand-alone app...  but it did not include Audiobus or IAA technologies. This is an approach I … [Read more...]

Phasemaker update – Bram Bos goes universal with his AU FM synth

I reviewed Bram Bos' new Phasemaker iOS synth app here on the Music App Blog just a couple of weeks ago. It's a brilliant little synth inspired by the FM synth engines of the 1980s (such as the classic DX7) but with a few modern twists thrown in for good measure. And, in iOS terms, the other modern twist is that the app support the AU plugin format, although it can also run as a stand-alone app...  And while it is designed with the AU format in mind, like iSEM or Poison-202 (for example), … [Read more...]

Phasemaker update – Bram Bos adds new features to his AU FM synth

I reviewed Bram Bos' new Phasemaker iOS synth app here on the Music App Blog just a few days ago. It's a brilliant little synth inspired by the FM synth engines of the 1980s (such as the classic DX7) but with a few modern twists thrown in for good measure. And, in iOS terms, the other modern twist is that the app support the AU plugin format, although it can also run as a stand-alone app...  And while it is designed with the AU format in mind, like iSEM or Poison-202 (for example), this is a … [Read more...]

Phasemaker review – Bram Bos adds an AU FM synth to his iOS music app line-up

It's only a few months since Bram Bos launched both Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM, his two iOS drum apps that are delivered in an AU plugin format. Both are interesting not because they feature some uber-complex and sophisticated drum programming options but perhaps because they are designed to be the opposite of that; drum synths that are easy to program, have modest demands on the iOS hardware host and very easy to get to grips with. Given the potential that Audio Units offers, it is perhaps … [Read more...]

TF7 updated – Pier Lim’s FM iOS synth app gets some IAA refinements

No such thing as a free lunch? Well, not when it comes to music apps on the App Store because there are some freebies that are definitely worth grabbing and one of them is Pier Lim's synth app TF7. The base app is a free download so you can get a flavour of what's on offer but the app is one of the better FM synth engines available for iOS; if you are a fan of the sounds created by synths such as the Yamaha DX7 (a bit of a hardware classic), then TF7 might be a way of getting a slice of the … [Read more...]
