BeatMirror giveaway results – 5 winners of Ten Kettles’ tempo-testing app

I reviewed Ten Kettles latest app - BeatMirror - a few days ago here on the Music App Blog. The app falls into the 'musical eduction' category and is aimed primarily at drummers. And, as discussed in the review, while the app is extremely simple to use (although there are a bunch of new features on the development list apparently), in this case, 'simple' most certainly doesn't mean the same as 'not useful'. BeatMirror's function is quite straightforward; it gives you feedback on your ability … [Read more...]

SessionBand sale – all SessionBand apps currently at half price

If you have ever played one of the more 'consumer' orientated electric keyboards, you will be familiar with the concept of 'auto-accompaniment'; you play some chords and the keyboard does its best to add some bass and drums (for example). Way back when, perhaps 'cheesy' would have been the best way to describe this technology; it was music Jim, but not as we know it.... Thankfully, the musical AI behind this kind of approach has come some way since then and, while 'muzak' is still available … [Read more...]

BeatMirror review – Ten Kettles expand on their iOS musical education app offerings

As an aid to your efforts as a musician, iOS doesn't just have to be about synths and drum machine and DAWs; it can also be about improving your musical skills. I've looked at a number of iOS music apps that might fall into this 'utility' category over the years here on the Music App Blog. There are some really good offerings but, as with that subscription for your local gym, buying an educational app doesn't buy you the right to the skills it teaches; some practice is required for that. Ten … [Read more...]

SessionBand flash sale – all SessionBand apps currently at pocket money price

Yes, this is a post about the SessionBand apps...  and the fact that, for a very limited time, they are on a 'silly sale'... but, just for a minute, indulge me while I provide a bit of background.... If you have ever played one of the more 'consumer' orientated electric keyboards, you will be familiar with the concept of 'auto-accompaniment'; you play some chords and the keyboard does its best to add some bass and drums (for example). Multirhythms Rhythm Trainer update – rhythmic skills app from Radicle gets some tweaks for iOS9

Learning to play the drums is harder than it might perhaps look. With my own drumming skills being 'basic' at best, timing is not such an issue (I can just about play a guitar in time) but timing in four separate limbs most certainly is…. ‘limb independence’ is quite a skill to acquire…. There is, however, an app for that; Multirhythms Rhythm Trainer - the rhythm practice/training tool app from Radicle - which I reviewed a few months ago here on the blog. It is a universal app, 3 MB is size, … [Read more...]

SessionBand Drums review – UK Music Apps bring ‘drums only’ model to their SessionBand series

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, developer UK Music Apps Ltd have recently added a new app to their extensive SessionBand series; SessionBand Drums. As I described in the ‘news’ piece, the SessionBand apps are a little like a ‘mini’ iOS equivalent of PG Music’s (often derided but actually quite powerful) Band In A Box desktop software. And, while BIAB covers dozens of musical styles within a single piece of software (and has a much broader feature set than would be practical in an iOS app), … [Read more...]
