Audiobus 3 updated – Audiobus gets AUv3 fine-tuning

I posted a full review of Audiobus 3 when it was released at the beginning of April. As promised by the Audiobus team, the new version had three new headline features. First, the app provides MIDI routing between compatible apps, making it easier to configure your overall arrangement of apps within a specific Audiobus project. Second, Audiobus 3 supports Audio Unit plugins as well as Audiobus and IAA compatible apps. This is obviously an important development given that AU is now making … [Read more...]

Samplebot updated – new sample-based music app from Michael Tyson gets some tweaks

Michael Tyson will be well known to iOS music makers. He is part of iOS history with his involvement in Audiobus and, with Loopy HD under his own A Tasty Pixel development label, he has produced one of the most iconic demonstrations of just what iOS can do in terms of creative music making. A couple of weeks ago, we saw the launch of Michael's latest iOS music app offering; Samplebot. As the title suggests, this is a sample-based music creation app but, as you might expect given Michael's … [Read more...]

Audiobus 3 updated – Audiobus gets iOS11 fine-tuning

AD 480 Reverb update – high-quality iOS reverb effect app from Fiedler Audio gets updated

I posted a review of the rather excellent AD 480 iOS music app from Fiedler Audio some time ago. AD 480 provides a high-quality reverb effect, with plenty of controls to shape your virtual space, a good set of presets in the 'pro' version, and both Audiobus and IAA support. However, the really novel feature is something that Fiedler Audio refer to as ‘dynamic upgrade’. Simply put, the app is provided in three versions; free, basic and pro (priced at ‘free (surprise!), UK£3.99/US$3.99 and … [Read more...]

Samplebot launched – new sample-based music app from Michael Tyson/A Tasty Pixel

Michael Tyson will be well known to iOS music makers. He is part of iOS history with his involvement in Audiobus and, with Loopy HD under his own A Tasty Pixel development label, he has produced one of the most iconic demonstrations of just what iOS can do in terms of creative music making. And today (slightly ahead of schedule apparently) sees the launch of Michael's latest iOS music app offering; Samplebot. As the title suggests, this is a sample-based music creation app but, as you might … [Read more...]

Starter for 10 – an iOS AU synth app selection to plug(in) a hole

I posted a bit of a discussion piece this week looking at the status of between-app connectivity for iOS music makers. My broad conclusion (hope?), while I’m sure not original in any form, is that I think the Audio Units plugin format under iOS has the potential to do what a combination of VST, AU and a couple of other formats, have done of the desktop. Workflows will, therefore, become based around a suitable AU host (a DAW/sequencer or a software-based audio mixer) and a collection of AU … [Read more...]

Format Fitness – iOS music makers need a plugin standard to stick

When Apple first launched iOS on the world, one of its key ‘features’ was the nature of the software (apps) that were intended to run on it. These were intended to be focused, ‘single-function’, tasks – a weather app, a stocks app, a memo recording app, a casual game app, a book-reading app, an email app, a simple photo editing app….. well, you get the idea. The software might well have been quite polished and slick but the vast majority of the apps offered a simple workflow and a tightly … [Read more...]

Elastic Drums updated – Oliver Greschke’s brilliant iOS drum app gets new features – and ON SALE

If you are a regular visitor to the Music App Blog you will be well be familiar with Elastic Drums from developer Oliver Greschke and Mouse On Mars. As I mentioned back in February, the app recently underwent a significant update to v.2.0.  Having added support for using drum samples (via an IAP) in v.1.9, v.2.0 added Ableton Live Set Export features, re-vamped the sample import process and made further sample-based kits available via the in-app store. Oliver is, however, one of the more … [Read more...]

Ravenscroft 275 Piano updated – UVI tweak their excellent iOS piano instrument

I posted a full review of UVI's Ravenscroft 275 Piano app just after it was launched. The app has caused a bit of a stir amongst iOS piano players and many folk think the sound and dynamic response of Ravenscroft make it the best acoustic piano app we currently have. The virtual instrument is obviously intended to be a recreation of the high regarded (and very expensive) Ravenscroft 275 grand piano which – if you are into hardware acoustic pianos – comes with a specification to die for. UVI … [Read more...]
