Audiobus 3 updated – Audiobus adds tempo controls via Ableton Link

I posted a full review of Audiobus 3 when it was released at the beginning of April. As promised by the Audiobus team, the new version had three new headline features. First, the app provides MIDI routing between compatible apps, making it easier to configure your overall arrangement of apps within a specific Audiobus project. Second, Audiobus 3 supports Audio Unit plugins as well as Audiobus and IAA compatible apps. This is obviously an important development given that AU is now making … [Read more...]

Loopy HD update – Michael Tyson’s classic iOS looper app gets more sharing options

Loops have become an integral part of modern music making. There is, of course, a big difference between using a few audio 'loops' and approaching your music making via a 'looper'. The latter is, however, an interesting experience if you have not tried it and, under iOS, despite the fact that there is now some very good competition (LoopTree, for example), my personal longstanding favourite for this method of music making is Loopy HD. I'm not alone here....  Loopy is a hugely popular app and … [Read more...]

Audiobus and Audiobus Remote update – run both apps on the same iOS device

If you are interested in the possibility of making music on an iOS device, Audiobus - despite not making any sound of its own - is about as 'must have' an app as it is possible to get. This utility app makes the whole process involved with getting various other music apps (synths, guitar amp sims, audio effects, DAWs, etc.) working together into a coherent workflow just so much easier...  seriously, if you don't own it then you really should get treatment for your masochism. I reviewed … [Read more...]

LiveFX update – creative multi-effects app from Elephantcandy gets Audiobus Remote support

We iOS musicians have been lucky enough to see a whole range of different audio effect apps released over the last few months. I’ve reviewed some of the best of these here on the blog and, as on the desktop, audio processing tools come in a number of varieties ranging from the corrective to the more creative. Towards the more corrective end of the spectrum might be noise gates, compressors, EQ or pitch correctors, while the more creative tools might go from standard effects such as delay or … [Read more...]

Audiobus Remote update – Audiobus companion app gets a new feature

Audiobus is so firmly embedded into the workflow of iOS musicians, that it was hardly surprising that when Audiobus Remote launched that regular Audiobus user with a suitable second iOS device to use alongside your main iOS music device snapped it up as a bit of a no-brainer purchase. Audiobus Remote, requires iOS8.4 or later and, as the name suggests is a ‘remote control’ app for Audiobus… and while you can most certainly continue to use Audiobus without it, in terms of workflow (and … [Read more...]

DrumKick update – playable drum app gets iOS9 and Audiobus Remote support

I first reviewed developer Mark Jeschke's DrumKick iOS music app back in July 2013.  At its heart, DrumKick is a fairly conventional ‘virtual’ drum kit with kick, snare, hi-hat, three toms, two crash cymbals, a ride cymbal and a cow bell. The fairly conventional interface is, however, very nicely thought out and implemented with some details that make it very playable. For example, the snare, ride and right cymbal can all trigger a number of different samples and are overlaid with a excellent … [Read more...]

Glitchbreaks update – Alex Matheu’s beat manipulator app adds Audiobus Remote support

While I've dabbled with Glitchbreaks on a regular basis, it is one of those apps that I've never quite got around to writing up a full review of for the blog (something I should rectify for both Glitchbreaks and Sliver, Alex Matheu's other iOS music app). As the name suggests, the app provides an environment for manipulating beats, allowing the user to add all sorts of audio effects to create new beats from old. The interface is pretty easy to navigate and the app is a lot of fun to use if … [Read more...]
