Audiobus 3 updated – Audiobus gets AUv3 fine-tuning

I posted a full review of Audiobus 3 when it was released at the beginning of April. As promised by the Audiobus team, the new version had three new headline features. First, the app provides MIDI routing between compatible apps, making it easier to configure your overall arrangement of apps within a specific Audiobus project. Second, Audiobus 3 supports Audio Unit plugins as well as Audiobus and IAA compatible apps. This is obviously an important development given that AU is now making … [Read more...]

ChordFlow updated – iOS MIDI chord sequencer app gets workflow refinements

I did a round-up article a good while ago here on the Music App Blog that looked at the various ‘MIDI performance’ apps available for iOS. A couple of apps that have appeared since that article are ChordUp and Clawtar, both from developer Dmitry Klochkov. Both bring a slightly different take on the whole MIDI note creation process and I'm sure many iOS musicians could find a use for either app amongst their utility apps. Both are also available for pocket money prices. Dmitry's most recent … [Read more...]

ThumbJam update – Sonosaurus bring their classic iOS music app up to date

There are a few iOS music apps that have a sort of 'classic' status and ThumbJam - by developer Sonosaurus - is most definitely one of them. If you are a newbie iOS musician - or maybe just never got around to giving the app a try - then you really should give it a go :-) Perhaps the thing that makes the app stand out from the iOS music app crowd is the rather wonderful way in which the playing interface has been implemented and, while the app is still a little quirky in some respects, the … [Read more...]

Egoist update – Sugar Bytes bring their brilliant iOS groove instrument up-to-date

Sugar Bytes have built quite a fan base amongst iOS musicians with apps such as Effectrix (a step-based multi-effects sequencer), Turnado (real-time multi-effects), Thesys (a very powerful step-sequencer plugin), Cyclop (their mono/bass synth instrument) and Unique (a powerful synth). Their other headline app - Egoist - which I reviewed when it was released, caused quite a stir and, if you are into electronic music production combining sliced loops, bass grooves and drum beats, the app ought … [Read more...]

Midiflow apps updated – Audiobus 3 MIDI utility apps from Johannes Doerr get iOS11 support

One of the key new features included within Audiobus 3 was MIDI routing; as with the audio routing options that Audiobus originally made its name with, the new version also allows you to route MIDI data between sources and destinations. This is a cool new feature and I'm sure is helping a lot of iOS musicians to make a little bit more sense of these 'virtual' MIDI connections. However, launched at the same time was a suite of MIDI utility apps from developer Johannes Doerr. Johannes is the … [Read more...]

Ravenscroft 275 Piano updated – UVI tweak their excellent iOS piano instrument

I posted a full review of UVI's Ravenscroft 275 Piano app just after it was launched. The app has caused a bit of a stir amongst iOS piano players and many folk think the sound and dynamic response of Ravenscroft make it the best acoustic piano app we currently have. The virtual instrument is obviously intended to be a recreation of the high regarded (and very expensive) Ravenscroft 275 grand piano which – if you are into hardware acoustic pianos – comes with a specification to die for. UVI … [Read more...]

Tera Synth updated – Audiobus 3 and SALE pricing for VirSyn’s Tera Synth

VirSyn make some great iOS music apps, many of which I've reviewed here on the Music App Blog over the last few years. ReSlice is one of my favourite app of 2017 will the recent Bark Filter brings a really interesting take on multi-band compression. Bubbling up towards the top of their synth tree is Tera Synth which I reviewed some time ago. This is a hugely impressive iPad-only synth. It is deep while remaining fairly easy to program and sounds very good indeed. Anyway, Tera Synth was … [Read more...]
