Flora Series giveaway results – three winners of bundles of the ‘flora’ iOS audio effect apps

As I've posted over the last few weeks, all of the 'Flora Series' apps from Timothy Barraclough and Paul Mathews have been updated to a v.2.0 status, with the highlight new feature being support for the AUv.3 plugin format. This whole series of apps are absolutely ideal for the AU format; each does a single, simple, job, they come with a compact set of controls and, even by iOS standards, they are available at a bargain price of just UK£1.99/US$1.99 each. If you regularly use a suitable AU … [Read more...]

Modstep updated – AppBC bring further tweaks to their iOS MIDI sequencer for iPad

Regular iOS music makers will be familiar with AppBC as the developer behind Studiomux and Modstep apps. I did a full review of Modstep just after it was launched and the feature set is impressive. You can use unlimited MIDI tracks and there is support for multiple MIDI continuous controllers on each MIDI track so you can modulate your sound sources to keep your sounds changing, etc. The first significant update added Audio Units (AU) support which was great to see. It's only a few weeks … [Read more...]

BandShift released – VirSyn add a filter/frequency shifter effect to their iOS music app line-up

VirSyn are one of the software developers that have fully embraced the iOS platform. They have gradually developed a very impressive catalogue of iOS music apps many or which - Tera Synth, microTERA, Harmony Voice, Addictive Synth, Tap Delay, Emo Chorus, Posiedon Synth, Voxsyn, Arpeggist, AudioEffx and, most recently, the brilliant ReSlice, for example - I've reviewed here previously on the Music App Blog. And they show no signs of slowing things down as we now have yet another new arrival; … [Read more...]

BeatHawk v.2.0 review – UVI bring significant new features in v.2.0 of their flagship iOS music app

I posted a full review of UVI's BeatHawk iOS music app here on the blog when it was first released. I was hugely impressed with the app. There are drum/groove box apps that perhaps pack in more features than BeatHawk does but I actually think UVI struck a brilliant balance between functionality and ease-of-use with the approach they adopted in the initial release....  and as it allows you to include melodic instruments within your projects, this is, in reality, much more than just a beat/groove … [Read more...]

apeFilter and apeDelay updated – apeSoft tweak AU support to their iOS effects apps

Developer apeSoft will be familiar to many iOS musicians through their various iOS music apps. These include iDensity, Stria and iPulsaret (all UK£5.99/US$5.99) plus the rather wonderful (and, to me, quite intimidating to program!) iVCS3 synth-meets-audio effect. If you have encountered any of these apps then you will know that apeSoft don’t really do ‘conventional’. Indeed, the iVCS3 – as a virtual recreation of a classic hardware synth from days gone by – is perhaps as conventional as it gets … [Read more...]

iVCS3 updated – apeSoft’s classic synth emulation gets some tweaks

No, I still don't really understand how to design sounds with it but apeSoft's remarkable emulation of EMS's original VSC3 hardware synth from 1969 - iVSC3 - does sound fabulous. That said, there are lots of synth-heads out there who have really taken to the iVCS3 and embraced what it has to offer in more greater detail than I have (or will ever be able to). If you are a fan of classic synths, but don't have the budget to buy the hardware, software emulations like this are as close as you are … [Read more...]

Dahlia Delay update – streamlined iOS delay app gets AU support

I've reviewed all iOS music apps from developers Timothy Barraclough and Paul Mathews at one stage or another on the blog. Cactus Chorus and Phlox Phaser were followed up with the equally floral themed Buttercup Bitcrush soon afterwards. There is also Saffron Saturator and Dahlia Delay in the same series. The apps names give a clear indication of the effects types but don't be put off by the flora theme or the very streamlined-looking user interface; these are all apps that punch well above … [Read more...]

BeatHawk update – UVI bring significant new features in v.2.0 of their beat making app

I posted a full review of UVI's BeatHawk iOS music app here on the blog when it was first released.
