Harmony Eight updated – VirSyn’s 8 voice iOS pitch-shifter effect gets some tweaks

VirSyn are one of the software developers that have fully embraced the iOS platform. They have gradually developed a very impressive catalogue of iOS music apps many or which - Tera Synth, microTERA, Harmony Voice, Addictive Synth, Tap Delay, Emo Chorus, Posiedon Synth, Voxsyn, Arpeggist, AudioEffx and, of course, the brilliant ReSlice, for example - I've reviewed here previously on the Music App Blog. A more recent arrival is Harmony Eight which was launched early in the summer. As the name … [Read more...]

FuxEQ review – Matthias Rath updates his 7-band EQ AU plugin for iOS11

While adoption of Apple’s Audio Unit (AU) plugin format has ben a bit of a slow burner under iOS, the last few months has really seen the format tack hold. Yes, we are still waiting to see some developers embrace the format (there remain some technical and financial issues I'm sure) but lots of iOS musicians are now working with the AU format, if not exclusively, then predominantly.   iOS11 is obviously the latest 'technical' hoop that developers are having to jump through....  but it … [Read more...]

Bram Bos updates – Troublemaker, Ripplemaker and Ruismaker all updated with MIDI out

I reviewed all of Bram Bos' various iOS music apps here on the blog including Troublemaker, Ripplemaker, Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM. They are all very good indeed, but the first two on this list are something special. I suspect both will make my 'top 10 of 2017' list when the time rolls around. Anyway, all four of these apps received similar updates on the App Store late yesterday. As well as 'minor housekeeping', there are some interesting - and very welcome - new features. For example, all … [Read more...]

Addictive Pro updated – VirSyn refine Audio Unit support their iOS synth app

VirSyn are one of the software developers that have fully embraced the iOS platform. They have gradually developed a very impressive catalogue of iOS music apps many or which - Tera Synth, microTERA, Harmony Voice, Addictive Synth, Tap Delay, Emo Chorus, Posiedon Synth, Voxsyn, Arpeggist and the brilliant ReSlice, for example - I've reviewed here previously on the Music App Blog. I reviewed what is now perhaps their flagship iOS synth - Addictive Pro - just after it was released. The … [Read more...]

n-Track Pro updated – n-Track Software’s multi-platform DAW/sequencer gets iOS11 support

While I'm a self-confessed Cubasis fan (and a Cubase user on the desktop), iOS has a number of really good options when it comes to DAW/sequencers. One of those that obviously has a solid user base is n-Track which I reviewed on the blog some time ago. One of the advantages of n-Track is that it is cross-platform; it exists on the desktop (Windows and OSX), iOS and Android. This multi-platform approach might well make it very appealing to some potential users as it means projects can perhaps … [Read more...]

FAC Chorus for OSX – classy chorus app ported to OSX as an AU plugin

FAC Chorus arrived on the App Store a few of weeks ago and I wrote a full review of the iOS version recently here on the blog. I was suitably impressed and, in terms of basics, the app is universal, requires iOS 10.0 or later and is a modest 19MB download. It is also modestly priced at just UK£2.99/US$2.99; very much in the casual purchase price range. What's perhaps less modest is the feature set. As shown in the various screenshots (and I'll get to in more detail in a minute), the apps … [Read more...]

BeatMaker 3 updated – long list of tweaks for Intua’s iOS DAW/sequencer

Intua's BeatMaker has been around on the App Store in one form or another for a very long time. BeatMaker 2, despite its name, is a full-fledged music production environment and I reviewed the app a few years ago here on the blog. However, the long-awaited update to BeatMaker 3 took place in mid-July and delivered a major overhaul and some significant new features. BeatMaker 3 is a pretty deep app - but, along with some familiar features and elements to the UI, there are also many new … [Read more...]

Starter for 10 – an iOS AU synth app selection to plug(in) a hole

I posted a bit of a discussion piece this week looking at the status of between-app connectivity for iOS music makers. My broad conclusion (hope?), while I’m sure not original in any form, is that I think the Audio Units plugin format under iOS has the potential to do what a combination of VST, AU and a couple of other formats, have done of the desktop. Workflows will, therefore, become based around a suitable AU host (a DAW/sequencer or a software-based audio mixer) and a collection of AU … [Read more...]

Format Fitness – iOS music makers need a plugin standard to stick

When Apple first launched iOS on the world, one of its key ‘features’ was the nature of the software (apps) that were intended to run on it. These were intended to be focused, ‘single-function’, tasks – a weather app, a stocks app, a memo recording app, a casual game app, a book-reading app, an email app, a simple photo editing app….. well, you get the idea. The software might well have been quite polished and slick but the vast majority of the apps offered a simple workflow and a tightly … [Read more...]
