Troublemaker updated – Bram Bos tweaks his 303 inspired AU-ready iOS synth app

As I mentioned last week in doing a full review, Bram Bos has just delivered a new iOS music app to the App Store to tempt us with. The choice of name - Troublemaker – suggests this is going to be an app with a certain amount of attitude. It doesn't disappoint and I think this might already be a strong contender for my 'top 10 iOS music apps of 2017' selection (and, if it's not, then we are in for a heck of a year!). Bram is building an impressive collection of iOS music apps. I reviewed his … [Read more...]

Ruismaker update – some tweaks for both of Bram Bos’ iOS AUi plugin drum machines

It's only a few months since Bram Bos launched both Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM, his two iOS drum apps that are delivered in an AU plugin format. Both are interesting not because they feature some uber-complex and sophisticated drum programming options but perhaps because they are designed to be the opposite of that; drum synths that are easy to program, have modest demands on the iOS hardware host and very easy to get to grips with. And Bram has not let the grass grow under his feet; both … [Read more...]

Sensual Sax review – Embertone port their sensual sax to iOS

As I mentioned a couple of days ago, Embertone - with collaboration from Blue Mangoo (a developer well know to iOS musicians through their iFretless apps) - have released a new virtual saxophone instrument for iOS. Creating realistic sounding solo instruments from samples can be quite a challenge. Sensual Sax is a sample-based virtual instrument any is launched at a fairly modest UK£3.99/US$4.99 price point. Embertone's background is in desktop virtual instruments and they have a line of … [Read more...]

Troublemaker review – Bram Bos delivers a dose of 303 inspired trouble in an iOS AU-ready app

As I mentioned yesterday, Bram Bos has just delivered a new iOS music app to the App Store to tempt us with. The choice of name - Troublemaker – suggests this is going to be an app with a certain amount of attitude. I’ll come back to that issue later but, as the app is a synth that attempts to capture the essence of Roland’s famous (infamous?) TB-303 hardware ‘bass’ synth – the synth that perhaps launched the whole ‘Acid’ music genre on its own – then Troublemaker is bound to make a lot of iOS … [Read more...]

Sensual Sax launched – Embertone deliver some smooth sax tones in an iOS app with AU support

Creating realistic sounding solo instruments from samples can be quite a challenge. On the desktop, that process is made easier (from a technical perspective at least) by using multiple samples to simulate changes in tone with the dynamics of the performance and for different performance articulations (long nots, short notes, bends, vibrato, slides, etc. depending upon the instrument being emulated). For iOS, however, multi-GB sample libraries are more difficult to justify given the restricted … [Read more...]

Troublemaker launched – Bram Bos delivers 303 attitude in an AU-friendly app for iOS

I reviewed Bram Bos' Phasemaker iOS synth app here on the Music App Blog just after it was released. It's a brilliant little synth inspired by the FM synth engines of the 1980s (such as the classic DX7) but with a few modern twists thrown in for good measure. If you liked Pahsemaker (and Bram's two AU drum synths Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM) then I suspect you might also like his follow up to Phasemaker; Troublemaker hit the App Store today. Indeed, I suspect Troublemaker might bring in a … [Read more...]

Phasemaker update – Bram Bos tweaks his AU-friendly FM synth

I reviewed Bram Bos' new Phasemaker iOS synth app here on the Music App Blog just after it was released. It's a brilliant little synth inspired by the FM synth engines of the 1980s (such as the classic DX7) but with a few modern twists thrown in for good measure. And, in iOS terms, the other modern twist in the original release was that the app supports the AU plugin format, although it can also run as a stand-alone app, via Audiobus or IAA (the later two added in a subsequent update). While … [Read more...]

Ruismaker update – refinements for compact iOS AUi drum machine plugin

We are beginning to see some positive signs on the AU plugin format. Progress has been slow but it is starting to take hold under iOS and I'm more than happy to lend a helping hand with what I think is important technology by promoting some of the excellent developers/apps that have already taken the plunge with AU. And, as I mentioned a couple of months ago, Ruismaker from developer Bram Bos was the first iOS drum machine app to appear in that format (closely followed by the equally good … [Read more...]

Phasemaker update – Bram Bos adds Audiobus support to his FM synth

I reviewed Bram Bos' new Phasemaker iOS synth app here on the Music App Blog just a few weeks ago. It's a brilliant little synth inspired by the FM synth engines of the 1980s (such as the classic DX7) but with a few modern twists thrown in for good measure. And, in iOS terms, the other modern twist in the original release was that the app supports the AU plugin format, although it can also run as a stand-alone app...  but it did not include Audiobus or IAA technologies. This is an approach I … [Read more...]
