Apple news – new iPads, new iOS and new iMacs

As any die-hard iOS musician will be aware, Apple held one of its super-slick launch events yesterday - WWDC17 from the San Jose Convention Centre - with Tim Cook and the crew taking us through a number of new Apple product enhancements. I must admit that, this time around, I didn't watch it 'live' but waited until I could work my way through the 2 hour+ presentation at my own speed (and skip through the bits that were of less personal interest). Like all these Apple events, it was … [Read more...]

Seventh heaven – Apple launch the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

As any die-hard iOS musician will be aware, Apple held one of its super-slick launch events yesterday with Tim Cook and the crew taking us through a number of new Apple product enhancements. Yes, sad that I am, I sat through the whole 2 hours (I multi-tasked though!)..... :-) The focus was very much on the iPhone and  Apple Watch so, if you are more of an iPad-based iOS musician, and maybe also run a desktop-based music system using a MacBook or iMac, then there was perhaps less to get your … [Read more...]

Music Memos review – Apple create a songwriter’s notepad in an app

Some time ago here on the Music App Blog, I published a post looking at a compact ‘ever ready’ toolkit of iOS music apps that were ideal for an iPhone and primarily intended to allow the user to ‘capture’ a song idea as and when the muse decided to strike. When I put that post together, one key element of that app collection was a simple audio recording app…. not perhaps a multitrack recorder, but something that could be fired up with the minimum of fuss, switched into record mode, and … [Read more...]

Final Touch update – Positive Grid add some tweaks to their iOS mastering app

Mastering used to be a bit of an unknown art form hidden within the depths of the overall music production process....  the last stage of an album project where a golden-eared, super-experienced (read 'costly') engineer, using esoteric and super-high quality equipment (read 'costly') set about the various mixes on the album project and applied some sonic fairy dust to get the project sounding (a) like a coherent whole, (b) ready for broadcast (and which often meant making the overall playback … [Read more...]

Apple shows the love to iOS musicians – latest iPad ad focuses on music making

I posted a discussion article a few weeks back looking at some of the great things about iOS as a music-making platform...  but also covering the 'not so great' stuff that, right here and right now, means that iOS is not yet the 'perfect' platform...  'has potential but still requires work' might be the most suitable school report at present. At the end of that piece, I commented that, much as Apple clearly like to associate themselves with the musician community - iTunes is, after all, a … [Read more...]

Final Touch update – latest version sees Positive Grid get together with Apple

Six appeal? – Apple launch the iPhone 6

If you are a bit of an Apple fan (and, to some extent, I guess you must be to be here in the first place given that iOS is a pretty dominant force when it comes to mobile music making), then you will undoubtedly have seen the various press releases surrounding the iPhone 6 launch this week. And if you are really in the Apple-nerd category (yep, me too....) then you may well have sat through the launch event video on the Apple website to get all the details. While the event mentioned iOS8 in … [Read more...]

If it’s good enough for Elvis….

When I first started thinking about creating the Music App Blog, I was already a confirmed Apple addict. And like lots of Apple fans, I'm geeky enough (and honest enough to admit) that I like to watch the product launch events and keep up with the latest news about products or developments with existing ones. All of which explains why, earlier today, while catching up on some other work at my computer, I had the video replay of the keynote presentation from yesterday's  - September 10th - … [Read more...]
