SoundScaper update – Igor Vasiliev adds further features to his ‘experimental sound mini lab’ app

Download from iTunes App Storesoundscaper logoI’ve reviewed a number of Igor Vasiliev’s iOS music apps here on the blog including Audio MasteringAltiSpaceMaster FX and Master Record. All these apps are excellent and deliver excellent performance combined with equally excellent value for money in a straightforward, no fuss, fashion.

I reviewed Igor’s SoundScaper app back in February 2015 just after it appeared on the App Store. This app was a bit of a departure from the more conventional audio effects processing apps Igor had released up until this point. Indeed, there isn’t a lot that you might describe about SoundScaper that deserves the word ‘conventional’ with perhaps the exception of the user interface design (this retains visual elements of Igor’s house style).

SoundScaper - sound design madness (in a good sense!) lies this way :-)

As suggested by the tag-line, SoundScaper is ‘an experimental sound mini lab’ so what you get are a series of tools for creating soundscapes, drones, glitches, ambient textures and just plain weird noises. If that is the kind of journey into sound that grabs your attention then you will undoubtedly find SoundScaper both a lot of fun and that it has a lot of sonic potential.

Igor has released a number of updates for the app since then but a further update – taking the app to v. 1.8 – appeared on the App Store on Tuesday. Aside from the usual bug-fixes, etc, this update brings some refinements and new features. For example, in the Morphing page, there is now a new control pad for morphing the oscillators that offers a bunch of new options for blending oscillators and adjusting their parameters. This includes a ‘return to zero’ option as well as new MIDI controls for the morphing modes….  all very cool.

The Morphong page includes a number of new features to help your sounds.... well... morph more effectively.

If you have an experimental streak or just work with sound design projects, SoundScaper is a bit of a no-brainer. Oh, and if you want a slice of the SoundScaper technology but in a format suitable for an iPhone, don’t forget Igor’s FieldScaper. Anyway, you can read the full SoundScaper review here but if you like left-of-centre apps, or are fond of some experimental sound design, then I suspect you are also going to like SoundScaper….  for weird, wonderful, and sometimes just plain scary, all for just UK£7.99/US$9.99, check out Igor’s new video below and then hit the download button :-)

    1. Utterly bewildering, but fun to play with. I just wish it could also be used in the AudioBus FX slot, and as an AU under AUM.

    2. Do not know why, but I am not able to have FM modulation to work….it happens only with the oscillator itself as source, bu not the other two….

    3. This is a great app to get lost in! Sometimes wonderful. Sometimes mad.
