Way back when, perhaps ‘cheesy’ would have been the best way to describe this technology; it was music Jim, but not as we know it….

Thankfully, the musical AI behind this kind of approach has come some way since then and, while ‘muzak’ is still available as a deliberate creative choice if you want it, equally, you can get some really very good results. On the desktop, one of the longest-standing example of this is Band-In-A-Box and, under iOS, albeit in a somewhat streamlined format, we have the SessionBand apps. If you want to be a bit snooty about it…  well, carry on….  but in the right hands, and with the very clever use of audio-based loops, this is a very capable compositional tool.

I’ve reviewed a couple of the SessionBand apps in the past here on the Music App Blog – the Drums and Blues titles – but there are a number of other genre-specific titles that are well worth a look. They are great practice tool, make construction of backing tracks a breeze and, if you need a ‘virtual’ band to play behind some low-key solo gigs, you could easily put them to good use.

Anyway, all the SessionBand app are currently on a very limited time flash sale. You can pick any of the apps up for just UK£2.99/US$2.99 – 50% off their usual price. That is, of course, somewhat less than a decent session musician might charge you for turning up at your studio to play on your next production. Find out more by following the links below but this isn’t an exhaustive list….  there are one or two other apps in the series also. At this price, they are undoubtedly very good value for money even if only used to create backing tracks while you practice your improvisation skills on your main instrument.
