SeekBeats updated – synthesis-based drum machine app gets some tweaks

Download from iTunes App Storeseekbeats logoWhen it comes to sample-based virtual drum machine app, the iTunes App Store is pretty well stocked. However, if you are an electronic music producer who prefers the vibe provided by synthesised drum sound, there are perhaps somewhat fewer choices. There are a few notable candidates of which my personal favourites would be Elastic DrumsDM2 and Attack Drums, all of which I’ve reviewed here on the blog in the past. The new Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM app, while offering a streamlined feature set, are also worth a look particularly as they come in the new AU plugin format.

However, there is another synthesis-based drum machine app that has a dedicated following and that has actually been around on the App Store since 2013; SeekBeats Drum Machine Synthesizer, although, to my shame, I only got around to doing a full review of the app a year or so ago.

Currently priced at UK£8.99/US$11.99, SeekBeats is a universal app that allows you to combine up to 8 synthesised drum sounds into step-based patterns. It requires iOS8.3 or later and, at a tiny 6MB, will not be too difficult to find a home for even if your iOS hardware is already pretty well stocked.

Anyway, SeekBeats received an update a couple of days ago when v.1.2.6 arrived on the App Store. The update is mainly a matter of refinements…  but as this is improving the support for Ableton LINK that was added back in v.1.2.2, and as this is a drum machine after all so sync with tempo in other apps is a pretty big deal, then it’s obviously a welcome sight. A further addition is a useful play/stop button that has been added to the Pads view so you now have transport control from this screen.

I really do wish I’d discovered SeekBeats earlier in my iOS music app addiction. It is pretty easy to use, sounds great and, with the snapshot and randomisation features, offers plenty of creative options. It also seems to play very well with other iOS music apps.

I think whether you prefer SeekBeats or one of the other synth-based drum apps is going to be very much a matter of personal taste and, whichever way you go, there are some great apps to be had. SeekBeats is, however, a pretty easy route into the whole world of drum synthesis and, if this category is still a slot waiting to be filled in your own iOS music app collection, then SeekBeats is most certainly worthy of consideration alongside the obvious competition. Check out the original full review of SeekBeats and then hit the download button to find out more via the App Store.
