Patterning update – Olympia Noise Co fine-tune their brilliant iOS drum machine app

Download from iTunes App StorePatterning logo 2As most regular Music App Blog readers will be aware, I’m a bit of a fan of what developer Olympia Noise Co do with their iOS music apps. ChordionOndes and dot Melody are well worth checking out. However, as I commented when originally reviewing the app, Ben Kamen and the team at Olympia Noise Co topped the lot with their Patterning: Drum Machine. There are some fabulous iOS drum/groove apps available but Patterning is absolutely one of my favourite iOS music apps whatever category we happen to be talking about. Have you ever compiled you own ‘top 10 iOS music apps ever’ list? I have…. and Patterning is on it.

If you have not yet read the full Patterning review or tried the app for yourself, then don’t miss out. Patterning is – quite simply – brilliant; beautiful to look at, so very clever in terms of the programming options and, as far as I’m aware, unique as a drum/rhythm programming environment (iOS or desktop). This is my personal ‘go to’ app for electronic beat/groove creation…..

Since its release, Olympia Noise Co have continued to raise the bar. New features have been added significant improvements in the timeline feature, MIDI mapping for remote control, Ableton Link, Ableton Live Let export and cloud-based drum kit sharing.

Anyway, it’s always nice to see a favourite app get some developer love and v.1.3.1 of Patterning arrived on the App Store yesterday. This doesn’t really add any major new features  but it does bring a whole range of small refinements, improvements and bug-fixes. Some of these are probably iOS11 related but there are other things also. For example, you can now import/export your entire Patterning database containing all songs, kits and samples, via iTunes File Sharing. This improves over the previous process for doing the same job.

Would I love to see Patterning somehow magically appear as an AU plugin? Yes, I absolutely would. And I also wish there was a VST version for my desktop system as I would buy it in a flash. Patterning is top notch stuff and recommended without any reservations….If you have any use for programmed drum pattern and/or electronic drum sounds, at UK£9.99/US$9.99, Patterning is a no-brainer and amazing value.

Check out the original review and the demo videos below but, in my own opinion, this is an app that is good enough to buy an iPad for….  If this is an app you have not yet tried, then hit the download button to find out more via the App Store.
