Patterning update – Olympia Noise Co add Ableton Live export to their brilliant iOS drum machine app

Download from iTunes App StorePatterning logo 2As most regular Music App Blog readers will be aware, I’m a bit of a fan of what developer Olympia Noise Co do with their iOS music apps. ChordionOndes and dot Melody are well worth checking out. However, as I commented when originally reviewing the app, Ben Kamen and the team at Olympia Noise Co toped the lot with their Patterning: Drum Machine. There are some fabulous iOS drum/groove apps available but Patterning is absolutely one of my favourite iOS music apps whatever category we happen to be talking about.

If you have not yet read the full Patterning review or tried the app for yourself, then don’t miss out. Patterning is – quite simply – brilliant; beautiful to look at, so very clever in terms of the programming options and, as far as I’m aware, unique as a drum/rhythm programming environment (iOS or desktop). This was absolutely one of my favourite releases in 2015 and it still remains a ‘go to’ app for electronic beat/groove creation…..

Since its release, Olympia Noise Co have continued to raise the bar. New features have been added significant improvements in the timeline feature, MIDI mapping for remote control and, in v.1.0.6 back in December last year, Ableton Link support was added.

However, a further update has appeared today and, if you have already read my earlier post about the update to Triqtraq, then you might have guessed what’s coming; yep, Patterning is now offering Ableton Live Sets export. As with Triqtraq, you can now export your current Patterning project as an Ableton Live Set into a standard ZIP file and then port that across to Ableton Live for further work on your desktop or laptop system.  If, of course, you have access to Live in the first place…  but that’s not a problem either as, if you own Patterning, you can now download Ableton Live ‘Lite’ for free and make a start. Yep, I’ve tried it and it works a treat :-)

That’s not all that’s new though in the v.1.2 update. Standard audio export to AIFF files now offers an ‘All Patterns’ option so you can quickly generate audio loops from all the patterns in your project; very cool. The update also provides some tweaks for the Audiobus support, iOS10 users and squashes a few minor bugs.

The export process creates a ZIP files that is then easy to transfer to your desktop/laptop system for importing into Live.

I’m not the only one who thinks that Patterning is a brilliant piece of software…. the app has won a ‘runner up’ award in the App Store Best of 2015 list. That’s a pretty big deal in itself and must have raised the profile of the app considerably. This latest update simply makes an already excellent app even better….

If you have any use for programmed drum pattern and/or electronic drum sounds, at UK£7.99/US$9.99, Patterning is a no-brainer and amazing value. Check out the original review but this is an app that is good enough to buy an iPad for…. I just wish there was a VST version for my desktop system as I would buy it in a flash. Patterning is top notch stuff and recommended without any reservations….

    1. Hello John, I don’t understand where I may find the serial number needed by Ableton Lite ?

      • Hi Kitusai…. if you run through the procedure fully, you should receive an email to the email address you used to register for the download…. and in that email should be a serial number…. I think I did this via Triqtraq but the process should, I think, be the same…. Let me know how you get on…. Best wishes, John
