Ops update – Jonathan MacKenzie adds new features to his iOS modular synth

Download from iTunes App StoreWhile I’m well out of my synth programming comfort zone by the time we get to modular synths, that doesn’t mean I’m not interested in the technology though and I reviewed an excellent new modular synth app – Ops from developer Jonathan Mackenzie – just after it was released here on the blog. I was very impressed…..

The App Store blurb indicated Ops is ‘designed to make it easy to create and explore sound interactively with a touch screen’ and, while that doesn’t guaranteed that even a synth-o-phoebe like me will cope, it does suggest that Jonathan is trying to make synth design as accessible as he can.

Ops – a modular synth app for iPad and iPhone.

Jonathan has continued work on the app and we have seen a number of minor technical updates. However, a further update -v.1.1.1 – landed on the App Store yesterday and, as well some minor fixes, this also introduces some new features. Perhaps the highlight of these are new ‘ops’ (modules) for recording your own samples and then playing them back. I’m sure this will be an attractive addition for DIY synth hackers. There are also some workflow refinements as you can now both edit a design and play with it at the same time. Equally, a full undo/redo feature is now included. Oh, and there are some additional Boolean and other maths ops added apparently.

Do I understand all this? Well, no, not al of it :-) But, thankfully, Jonathan has provided a brief demo video to support the new release and I’ve embedded below (it’s the first of the three videos; the other two provide a more general overview of the app).  Nor does my lack of synth programming skills stop me thinking this is a cool app with lots of potential. Here’s hoping Jonathan gets the support – through sales – that the app deserves so he can keep the development work progressing….

The Edit screen includes a scrollable list of all the available ‘ops’ (modules) at the bottom…. and there are plenty of choices to be found.

OK, so modular synths are not for everyone but, if you are a die-hard synth head, DIY synth building in software can be an addictive habit. If that sounds like you, Ops is a universal app, requires iOS10.0 or later and is a 90MB download. The app is priced at UK£9.99/US$9.99. MIDI in is supported, both for note and controller data, if you want to control your synth designs via external hardware. Audiobus and IAA support are also provided.

Check out the original full Ops review, watch the demo videos embedded below and then hit the download button to find out more….
