iOS8.1 update – Is it safe to come out from behind the sofa yet?

audiobus ios8As announced at the Apple Event last week, yesterday saw iOS8.1 become available for download via iTunes. As I commented last week, while 8.1 includes some new features aimed at features of both the new iPad hardware and the ‘continuity’ elements between iOS and the new OSX release Yosemite, I’m sure there are lots of iOS musicians who are hoping that there might also be some under-the-hood changes aimed at the various issues they have encountered with running their favourite iOS music apps.

iOS8.1 - hopefully the update will bring a smoother experience for those iOS musicians who have experienced problems since updating to iOS8.

In the interests of research (and because I’m weak-willed and suffer from ‘gotta update syndrome’), I downloaded and installed iOS8.1 onto my iPad Air (or should that be iPad Air 1?) this morning. It should be said at this point that – thankfully – I haven’t had too many problems with iOS8 anyway. I waited a week or so after the initial release until a number of my ‘go to’ apps had been made ‘iOS8 ready’ (most notably Cubasis as that generally forms the hub of how I use my iPad) and, aside from the very occasional glitch, it has been a pretty smooth ride. Not for everyone though… and the various iOS music forums have seen a lot of users reporting all sorts of different issues.

Animoog and Alchemy also seemed quite happy in Audiobus under iOS8.1 on my test system.

I’ve not had time to do any extensive or exhaustive testing of 8.1 but I have run a few of my favourite apps within Audiobus just to see how things ran. And, aside from a single ‘error’ message that appeared when I first launched Animoog (and then disappeared and has not returned), I have to say that, so far at least, things seem to have gone very smoothly indeed.

A busy Cubasis project and external two synths playing 'live' - all very smooth under the new iOS8.1 update.

Two apps that I’ve seen a few users comment of difficulties with – Animoog and Alchemy – ran fine on my iPad Air (1) test system. Equally, a collection of apps including Thor, Sector, Cubasis and some iOS effects apps, all ran quite happily together while Cubasis was also playing back about a dozen audio tracks. The system remained response throughout…

All-in-all, my first encounter with iOS8.1 is therefore a positive one…  If you have also updated already then please feel free to leave your own first thoughts via the comments system below.

    1. Thanks for the news. I upgraded this morning (iPad-mini retina) and I’ve also had good results with Audiobus using a variety of apps. I even kept wifi on and not in airplane mode just to see if it interfered or caused problems — and it did not. Other apps, musical and non, all seem fine.

I think things are good with 8.1 and the various app and AudioBus updates we’ve had recently. So for people waiting to upgrade from iOS7, I’d say jump in — after backing up all of your important stuff — of course.

    2. Sadly, Filtratron needs an update to work with new audiobus; which is a real shame since I adore that app. Also ProteinDK is just crashing on start. Otherwise, everything else I got has been working fine with only some occasional weirdness with Audiobus itself.

    3. I can report everything running lovely on 7 …..intend to update in the new year :)

    4. Performance on iPad 3 feels smoother. No probs so far.

    5. Heyo,
all kinds of problems on iPhone 6 Plus. Not one of my DAWs (Multitrack DAW, n-Track) works with IAA. Crashes and crashes.
Almost no problems on iPad Air. Both running iOS 8.1.

    6. have problems since iOS 8.3 with animoog and audiobus. the audiobus controls don’t show up in animoog.
