FunkBox updated – Synthetic Bits add iOS8 support and new features

Download from iTunes App StoreFunkbox logoAnd they keep coming….  just a couple of days after posted about the update to Fingerlab’s excellent DM1 drum machine app, today we get the v.3.5 update to another iOS drum machine classic; FunkBox.

This update brings a few minor fixes and adds a couple of samples that were missing-in-action to one of the kits. There is also a rather nice new drum roll option that queues up the first hit of the roll to that it will always play in time even if your own timing in triggering it is not so hot. Equally, you can save the MIDI configuration as part of the Audiobus State Saving process if you wish.

However, as with most updates hitting the App Store at present, the prime feature is iOS8 compatibility and bringing the Audiobus 2 SDK up-to-date. A quick test drive this morning produced a very solid performance on my iOS-filled iPad Air. I was able to run Funkbox quite happily within Audiobus 2. The app also locked nicely with Cubasis and responded to the Cubasis transport controls within the Audiobus control strip. Oh, and the new drum roll trigger feature works a treat; very useful.

In the iOS8 Settings app you can configure some of Funkbox's settings including the new queue option for the snare rolls.

FunkBox was always a very cool, fun, and easy-to-use virtual drum machine. It has a very useable collection of classic drum machine kits and good pattern editing and performance features (the ‘roll’ button, for example). With this update, Synthetic Bits have bought FunkBox right up-to-date in terms of iOS music production technology.

If you haven’t checked out the original FunkBox review, then give it a read. However, if you are simply looking for a very useful and very useable virtual drum machine – now with iOS8 support – then grab yourself a download and check FunkBox out. At the current UK£2.99 price point, FunkBox Drum Machine represents excellent value for money.
