MV08 update – cool 808-inspired drum machine app gets new features

OK, so I know iOS is not short of really good drum apps so long-standing iOS music makers might find it hard to get too excited by the prospect of a new options....   but recently released MV08 from developer MVStudioApps (with James Milton behind the wheel) is rather cool....  and, while I have not yet got around to doing a full review, as it has just received it's first update, I thought I better give it a little attention here on the blog. MV08 is, sonically at least, inspired by a … [Read more...]

Pumphouse review – Audio Damage offer side-chain compression without the need for a side-chain

As I've posted over the last few weeks, Audio Damage are a developer on an iOS mission, with several new releases, many of which are based upon ports of their highly-regarded desktop plugins. As well as the recent Phosphor 2 synth release, we have also seen Rough Rider 2, Grind Distortion, Eos 2, Dubstation 2, FuzzPlus 3, QuatroMod and Replicant 2, all within the last few weeks. And there is no sign of any let up as we now have the release of a further new iOS app; Pumphouse. If the title … [Read more...]

PPG Infinite review – Wolfgang Palm’s latest iOS synth takes us to infinite depths

There has been quite a bit of pre-release buzz, but synth pioneer and all-round creative mind Wolfgang Palm has now introduced his long-awaited new synth iOS app; PPG Infinite has hit the App Store a few days ago. Wolfgang is undoubtedly a bit of a synth super-hero to many. He was the man behind wavetable synthesis back in the 1970s but, even some 40 years later, he is still bringing new ideas to the world of synthesis. Amazingly, that includes contributing to the world of iOS music making … [Read more...]

Bark Filter review – VirSyn add a powerful multi-band compressor to their iOS music app catalogue

VirSyn will be well known to the majority of computer-based musicians whether you work on the desktop or a mobile platform such as iOS. The company have an extensive portfolio of iOS music apps covering a number of different synths, audio effects and a dedicated arpeggiator app. Many of these apps are iOS-sized ports of VirSyn’s desktop virtual instruments and effects and I’ve reviewed a good number of them here on the blog over the last few years or so. VirSyn newest addition to this … [Read more...]

Cornflower Compressor review – the ‘flora’ project iOS music app collection gets a new addition

I've no idea where the whole 'flora' theme comes from for developers Timothy Barraclough and Paul Mathews but their series of stripped-down, stompbox ethic, iOS audio effects apps are all very good indeed. I've reviewed all the apps in the series  - Cactus Chorus, Phlox Phaser, Saffron Saturator, Buttercup Bitcrush, Dahlia Delay and Tiger-lily Tremolo - previously here on the blog and, at genuine pocket money prices, they are about as an obvious casual purchase as you are likely to find. A … [Read more...]

FAC Chorus review – classy chorus app in an AU format

I've mentioned a few times here on the blog that modulation effects are perhaps not something I use a lot in my own music making. Some of this might be a bit of a hangover from listening to too many 'classic' guitar sounds recorded in the 70s/80s when chorus/phaser/flanger pedals were a novelty that (to my ears at least) becomes very old, very quickly. Don't get me wrong though; used a little more tastefully, modulation-based effects can serve a very useful and creative role. However, I … [Read more...]

NFM review – new iOS FM synth app with AU support from NS1 developer

I reviewed Nikolozi Meladze’s NS1 synth back in February of 2016 as it was released. NS1 was (still is; it's been regularly updated since launch) a very solid virtual analog synth instrument with some very cool sounds and, while programmable by the user, the control set was not so complex that synth newbies would find it too intimidating. Of course, the other key element for NS1 which, at the time it was launched, was novel was that it was designed with AU support from the ground up. Indeed, … [Read more...]
