DrumStudio update – compact iOS playable drum kit app with sequencer gets 64-bit support

I've never quite got around to doing a full review of Rollerchimp's DrumStudio app but I did give it a mention in my most recent iteration of the the blog's Drum App Roundup article. Drum Studio provides another take on the playable virtual drum kit. The visual representation of the drum kit is nice and includes both a cowbell and some hand drums in addition to the usual kick, snare, hi-hat, toms and cymbals. Anyway, with Audiobus and IAA support, the app has ticked quietly along as iOS … [Read more...]

Vatanator SX giveaway – five copies of Georgi Georiev’s streamlined iPhone drum machine to be won

I’ve reviewed a whole range of different drum and groove apps for the blog over the last few years. These comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes and, within any iOS musician’s app collection, there is most certainly room for a number of these tools as, across the whole range, they offer different features, functions and approaches to working. One recent release in this category is Vatanator. This is the first app by developer Georgi Georgiev and I did a full review of the app on the blog soon … [Read more...]

GoBeats update – Positive Grid add further features to their iOS AI drummer/jam app

Positive Grid are well known within the iOS music making world for their highly regarded guitar rig/amp modelling software with BIAS Amp and BIAS FX being the current flagship products. Having started with iOS, they are, however, one of the few iOS developers that have attempted to 'go the other way' and expand their product line into the desktop world. Equally, they have also moved into hardware and their latest product - the BIAS Head amplifier - is an ambitious undertaking, especially as they … [Read more...]

Drum Session review – Derek Buddemeyer and Blue Mangoo collaborate on new iOS drum app

We are blessed with some excellent iOS drum apps whether you want to create acoustic drum parts of rock/pop/indie styles or electronic drums for more… well…  electronic music styles. Personally, I think the latter of these two categories is brilliantly served with apps that are just as good as the options available on the desktop. However, when it comes to the former, then virtual drummer software such as Toontrack’s Superior Drummer (or the entry-level version EZ Drummer) or BFD from FXpansion … [Read more...]

Ruismaker FM review – a second drum synth app in an iOS AUi plugin format from Bram Bos

It's only a couple of months since Bram Bos launched his Ruismaker iOS drum app. Ruismaker was interesting not because it featured some uber-complex and sophisticated drum programming options but perhaps because it was designed to be the opposite of that; a drum synth that was easy to program, had modest demands on the iOS hardware host and very easy to get to grips with. Oh, and it also came in an Audio Units format only. If anything, this last point was perhaps just as important as whether … [Read more...]

Soft Drummer review – Luis Martinez adds brushes to his excellent iOS drum machine series

Luis Martinez has a series of ‘drum’ apps that sort of sit between the ‘virtual drummer’ and sample-based drum machines and, in many ways, offer something that is a bit of the best of both. I’ve reviewed Rock Drum Machine, Rock Drum Machine 3, Brazilian Drum Machine, Funk Drummer and Afro Latin Drum Machine previously. However, as I posted a couple of days ago, there is now a new addition to Luis' catalogue; Soft Drummer arrived on the App Store yesterday. And before the 'soft' title gets you … [Read more...]

Soft Drummer launched – Luis Martinez adds brushes to his excellent iOS drum machine series

I’ve reviewed a whole range of different drum and groove apps here on the Music App Blog over the last few years. While they might all be ‘apps’, the approaches do vary and cover a wide range of musical territory. For example, you might get apps that offer drums based upon audio loops (Drum Loops HD), sample-based virtual drum machines (I guess Patterning comes in here but it is way more than that), virtual drummers (think DrumPerfect Pro here), drum synths (Elastic Drums or Attack Drums or DM2 … [Read more...]
