Fugue Machine review – simple but brilliant new iOS sequencer concept from Alexandernaut

I reviewed the rather wonderful Arpeggionome Pro from developer Alexandernaut some time ago here on the Music App Blog. As the name suggest, this is an argeggiator app but, with the use of the touchscreen, it brings a very novel approach. It might not be for every iOS musician but, if you are into electronic and ambient music styles, it is an inspiring and very creative app…. It may also be one that slipped by a lot of iOS music makers which is a great shame. Alexandernaut is back with a new … [Read more...]

Stompwatch review – Secret Base Design add another iOS music utility app to their lineup

I reviewed Secret Base Design’s significant update to their Live Guitar app a few days ago on the blog but Patrick Madden has obviously been keeping himself busy of late because a further app was launched on the app store last week also; Stompwatch. Priced at just UK£3.99, Stompwatch is another example of what Secret Base Design specialise in… no-nonsense utility apps for the iOS musician. In this case what we are being offered is a ‘virtual MIDI pedal board’ and, while this is perhaps not a … [Read more...]

Arpeggist updated – VirSyn add new features and fixes to their dedicated MIDI arpeggio app

A number of the rather excellent iOS music apps from VirSyn are currently on a pretty significant sale. This includes VirSyn's iOS mega-synth app Tera Synth alongside apps such as microTERA (a waveshapping synth and currently 50% off), Harmony Voice (pitch shifter and automatic harmony generation; also 50% off) and Addictive Synth (50% off). Some of these apps feature a very well featured arpeggiator function and one of VirSyn's more recent releases was Arpeggist, an iPad app that takes those … [Read more...]

midiLFOs review – midi modulation ‘toy’ from developer Art Kerns

If developer Art Kern’s name sounds a little familiar then, for iOS musicians of a more long-standing nature, it is probably because Art is part of the Synthetic Bits development team that makes the excellent Funkbox drum machine app. Obviously liking to keep himself busy, Art has also been working on a side-project more recently and that product landed on the App Store a few days ago; midiLFOs. Now Funkbox is, in its own way, quite a colourful app. However, given the very bold colour scheme … [Read more...]

Arpeggist updated – VirSyn add new features and fixes to their dedicated MIDI arpeggio app

As I posted a week or so ago, a number of the rather excellent iOS music apps from VirSyn are currently on a pretty significant sale. This includes VirSyn's iOS mega-synth app Tera Synth alongside apps such as microTERA (a waveshapping synth and currently 50% off), Harmony Voice (pitch shifter and automatic harmony generation; also 50% off) and Addictive Synth (50% off). Some of these apps feature a very well featured arpeggiator function and VirSyn's latest release was Arpeggist, an app that … [Read more...]

Arpeggist review – VirSyn cut their arpeggiator loose as a stand-alone app

I’ve reviewed a number of VirSyn’s excellent iOS music apps here on the blog in the past. As well as some interesting audio effects (for example, AudioReverb) and vocal processing tools (for example, Harmony Voice), these include a number of very good synth app including Cube Synth, Addictive Synth, microTERA and, most recently, Tera Synth. I’ve also expressed a fondness for arpeggiators here on the blog in the past (they provide one solution to my somewhat average keyboard skills) and a … [Read more...]

Arpeggist launched – VirSyn add a dedicated MIDI arpeggio arp to their iOS music app catalog

As I posted a few days ago, a number of the rather excellent iOS music apps from VirSyn are currently on a pretty significant sale. This includes VirSyn's iOS mega-synth app Tera Synth alongside apps such as microTERA (a waveshapping synth and currently 50% off), Harmony Voice (pitch shifter and automatic harmony generation; also 50% off) and Addictive Synth (50% off). Some of these app features a very well featured arpeggiator function. It might not be in quite the same class as Sugar Bytes … [Read more...]

Midiflow review – MIDI utility app for iOS from Johannes Doerr

I love my collection of iOS synths, guitar amp modellers and audio effects but, while ‘exciting’ might not be the word to describe them, I’m also glad I’ve got access to a number of very useful ‘music utility’ apps that I use on a regular basis. One of these is MidiBridge by Audeonic Apps (Nic Grant’s app home and where MidiBus and, in part, Music IO have come from). Given just how unpredictable MIDI can be under iOS, MidiBridge is an interesting app as it attempts to help you untangle your … [Read more...]

Genome MIDI Sequencer review – stand-alone pattern-based MIDI sequencer for iPad

As regular readers here will be aware, I’ve recently started a kind of ‘MIDI stuff’ series of articles aimed at those iOS musicians that perhaps don’t have a background in more ‘traditional’ MIDI technology. The most recent article in the series looked at the different kinds of MIDI sequencers (using the term in its broadest sense) one of which was the pattern/step-based sequencer. Korg’s Gadget is an excellent example of this type. You build up short (a bar or few bar) patterns for each of … [Read more...]
