Top 10 iOS music apps of 2016 – the Music App Blog selection

2016 has been another interesting year of iOS music making. As ever, we have had to deal with the annual cycle of both hardware and software updates from Apple. Fortunately, the introduction of iOS10 went pretty smoothly and, while the iPhone had a pretty substantive update, things were a little more muted for the iPad itself. Maybe evolution rather than revolution…. and, for me at least, I’d say that was a good thing. At a personal level, perhaps the only real disappointment is that we are … [Read more...]

iOS drum app roundup – drum and groove-based instruments for iOS

I’ve done a number of iOS music app ‘roundup’ articles on the blog in the past covering different categories of apps such as synths, DAW/sequencers, guitar rig sims and audio effects. While these are perhaps of most interest to the newer iOS musicians (old-hands are likely to be familiar with the more popular apps in each of these categories already), these articles have always attracted lots of readers and generate plenty of ‘… but you missed out the brilliant XYZ….!’ sorts of feedback….   all … [Read more...]

iOS virtual instrument roundup – sample-based virtual instruments for iOS – v.2

If you have subscribed to the Music App Blog email newsletter then you will have obtained a copy of our free guide titled ’25 iOS music apps to get you started’. This guide is probably due (yet another) update but, as keen eyed readers will have noted (err….  or anyone who can actually count) there are actually rather more than 25 apps listed in the guide. The reason for this is (a) quite simple and (b) rather wonderful. It’s simple because the iTunes App Store has a massive selection of iOS … [Read more...]

iOS guitar amp sim roundup – virtual guitar rigs for the iOS owning guitar player

Regular readers of the Music App Blog will know that the only instrument I claim any degree of proficiency upon is the guitar. That means, of course, that when it comes to recording my own music, a lot of it involves guitars and, in particular, electric guitars. I’ve had a recording tech habit for more years that I care to recall…. and while I’ve been lucky enough to have a recording space for my own use for many of those years, it has very much been a home/project studio environment (up … [Read more...]

iOS synth apps roundup – brilliant virtual synths for equally brilliant prices – v.2

I've done a few 'best in category' iOS music app roundups here on the Music App Blog at various stages and, while there are a number of obvious categories I've not got around to covering yet (I'll get there eventually), I'm also conscious that several of those I have done are in need of a bit of updating. So, without further ado, it's time to get started and first on the list (for some fairly obvious reasons of popularity) is my v.2.0 roundup of the iOS synth apps. In the wonderful world of … [Read more...]

Top 10 iOS music apps of 2015 – the Music App Blog selection

2015 has certainly been another eventful year of iOS music making. As ever, we have had to deal with the annual cycle of both hardware and software updates from Apple. Fortunately, the introduction of iOS9 proved to be somewhat less traumatic that the arrival of iOS8 twelve months previously. We have also seen the introduction of new iOS hardware with the obvious highlights being the first sight of 3D Touch on the new iPhones and the larger format iPad Pro. There are a few things that also … [Read more...]

Top 10 iOS music apps of 2014 – the Music App Blog selection

2014 has certainly been an eventful year of iOS music making. On the one hand, we had the introduction of iOS8 and, while for the the general user I think this iteration of Apple’s mobile OS has some significant new features, its arrival certainly posed a bit of a challenge for iOS musicians (a challenge that we are, to some extent, still dealing with). Eventually, I’m sure iOS8 will bring benefits for us - you know, just before iOS9 gets launched :-) - but, for many iOS music makers, ‘smooth’ … [Read more...]

iOS synth apps roundup – brilliant virtual synths for equally brilliant prices

In the wonderful world of the App Store, there is one category of iOS music apps that is truly well served; synth apps. I’m sure there are a good number of reasons for the synth app cup to run over but I guess it mostly down to a combination of two factors. First, lots of synth fans are quite ‘techie’ by nature and, whether your background is in synth hardware or virtual synths made for desktop computers, if you like synths then you are going to have a few technical bones in your body. That, … [Read more...]

iOS audio effects apps roundup – Part 2; creative audio effects

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a ‘part 1’ iOS audio effects apps roundup where I focused on the more conventional audio effects that are currently available for iOS. While these were very much a personal selection, any of the choices would be obvious to most experienced iOS musicians and there are some brilliant apps to choose from; AltiSpace, VanDelay, AUFX:Dub, Caramel, Audio Mastering, Final Touch…. well, you get the idea. Classifying effects apps into ‘conventional’ and ‘creative’ types … [Read more...]
