BT series update – Positive Grid’s Bluetooth footpedals get some tweaks

If you have been hooked into the wonderful world of iOS music making for any length of time then Positive Grid will need little by way of introduction. Their headline iOS music apps – JamUp Pro, Final Touch, BIAS Amp and BIAS FX - have all made a significant impact and guitar players in particular have been very well served. As well as porting some of their iOS apps over onto the desktop (a brave move given the established competition), PG also announced some time ago that they were going … [Read more...]

GuitarJack Stage – Sonoma Wire Works iOS compatible stage ready guitar pedalboard available

Way back in the mists of time here on the Music App Blog (OK, August 2012 to be precise) I did a review of Sonoma Wire Works incredibly stylish guitar audio interface for iOS; the GuitarJack 2. This did the same job as something like IK Multimedia's original iRig but at a higher price and, it has to be said, with a rather more stylish and desirable look. With a very sleek metal finish (and a soild, weighty feel to go with it), the physical design of the GJ2 was one of the few add-on gadgets … [Read more...]

Steinberg UR22 mkII review – high quality 2-in/2-out interface with iOS support

Making music under iOS is not all about apps; for most musicians it will also involve getting audio and MIDI data into, and out of, their iOS devices. And, as I’ve covered in the iPad Recording Studio series, that means you need some additional hardware to sit alongside your iPad or iPhone. With computer-based recording now very much accessible to all, there are all sorts of audio and MIDI interfaces out there for the hi-tech musician to pick from. However, not all of them are happy … [Read more...]

iRig Acoustic review – IK Multimedia add an acoustic guitar pickup system to their iOS hardware range

IK Multimedia have been keeping very busy of late with their hardware products aimed at the iOS musician. Having looked at the iRig Mic Lav, iRig Keys Pro and the iRig Pro Duo on the Blog over the last few weeks, the latest arrival is the iRig Acoustic. This is quite an interesting (novel?) product as it provides a rather cute-looking (guitar pick shaped) microphone/pickup for acoustic guitars (and also suitable for ukuleles) designed specifically for the iOS musician. There are all sorts of … [Read more...]

Cubasis LE review – Steinberg offer free LE version with selected hardware products

As most regular readers here will be aware, I’m a regular Cubasis user on my iPad having used Cubase on my desktop for many years. Since Steinberg introduced their iOS-sized Cubase sibling, it has established itself as one of the most popular DAW/sequencer platforms for iOS music making. The interface is generally very slick, the feature set is well chosen and it comes bundled with a decent selection of effects and virtual instrument options. All-in-all, with the right additional hardware … [Read more...]

iPad Pro review – going ‘Pro’ for iOS music making?

Well, the rumours were doing the rounds for months, and it’s been two months since the actual official announcement, but, finally, as of today, the iPad Pro is officially with us. Having stuck with my iPad Air 1 when the Air 2 was launched this time last year, I knew I was just about ready for an iPad update this time around (how else am I going to keep the Music App Blog up to date? Well, that’s my excuse anyway….) so I flexed my credit card and pushed the 'buy now' button.... By ‘Pro’, what … [Read more...]

iRig Pro Duo review – IK Multimedia add a compact two-channel audio+MIDI interface to their iOS-friendly product line

IK Multimedia have been keeping very busy of late with their hardware products aimed at the iOS musician. Having looked at both the iRig Mic Lav and iRig Keys Pro on the Blog over the last couple of weeks, the latest bit of hardware on to the test bench (OK, my living room table) was the new iRig Pro Duo. If you are familiar with IKM’s product line, the name here will be a bit of a giveaway as to the key features of the new device as it follows on rather neatly from the original iRig Pro. I … [Read more...]

iRig Mic Lav review – IK Multimedia bring an iOS-friendly lavalier mic to their product line

As I’ve commented here a few times, IK Multimedia are one of the music technology companies that have embraced iOS is wholehearted fashion. This has included apps such as AmpliTube, VocaLive, SampleTank, iGrand, iLectric and, more recently, Mic Room. However, it has also included hardware devices aimed at the iOS musician and I’ve reviewed a number of these devices here on the Music App Blog over the last couple of years including the iRig PRO, iRig BlueBoard, iRig 2, iRig Pads, iRig Mic … [Read more...]

iRig Keys Pro review – compact MIDI keyboard for iOS, OSX and Windows from IK Multimedia

About 18 months or so ago, I remember raising the issue of finding my ‘ideal MIDI keyboard controller’ in my weekly email newsletter. At the time, I was looking for a compact external MIDI keyboard to use mainly with my iPad but, like most music tech geeks, I had a specific ‘feature list’ to suit by particular needs. Now, there are lots of MIDI keyboards available on the market and, even a couple of years ago, many of them could be made to work with iOS. However, could I find one that really hit … [Read more...]
