Beatmaker 2 updated – Intua add inter app audio support

Download from iTunes App StoreBeatmaker 2 logoIntua’s BeatMaker 2 music app that, despite its name, is a full-fledged music production environment and not just a drum tool, has received a fairly significant upgrade this week. The headline features introduced with v.2.5 are inter app audio support under iOS7, the availability of new sound banks and kits through the Sound Store (including some free sound banks) and a new stereo delay effect. There are also a number of more minor tweaks and additions plus the usual round of bug fixes, etc.

Having given the update a quick spin, the inter app audio support seems to work well enough with the current crop of iOS synth apps that already support IAA. However, as far as I could see, Intua have not, as yet, implemented a system whereby you can integrate effects apps via IAA (unlike, for example, Auria, where that is possible). I tried a few IAA compatible synths (including Arturia’s iSEM as shown in the screenshots) and operation seemed pretty smooth.

IAA instrument apps are an option when you create a new track.

At present, the Sound Store has three ‘demo’ sound packs within it and these are currently all free. I assume these are ‘tasters’ for paid in-app-purchases that will become available shortly. Even so, the demos are worth downloading and provide a range of additional drum, bass, synth and FX sounds.

At present, you can only use instrument apps that have IAA support but not effects apps such as AUFX:Dub or AUFX:Space.

The stereo delay is a new effect within BeatMaker and. It follows the style of the other effects visually and the interface is a doodle to use. While BeatMaker 2’s effects are perhaps not its strongest suit, this is a good addition to the collection.

The new stereo delay effect is a welcome addition.

I did a round up of the more popular iOS DAW apps a couple of weeks ago and did a full review of BeatMaker 2 earlier in the year if you want to read more about Intua’s music app. It has perhaps been a little overshadowed by some of the more high-profile competition such as Garageband, Cubasis and Auria, but it has been around on the App Store for a long time and has a dedicated fan base. It’s a very capable recording environment and its good to see Intua moving it forward on a fairly regular basis.
