Roadtrip time – family catch-up and some downtime :-)

For regular visitors to the site, just a quick note to say that I'm going to be away for a few days and, as a consequence, things will be a little quieter around the website until I return.... After a very busy couple of months, mainly working on a number of production music projects (and therefore having a little less time for blogging), we are finally managing to get a short break to catch up with some family and friends back in the UK. Family time is always welcome....   although as we … [Read more...]

FieldScaper update – Igor Vasiliev adds Ableton Link to his iOS sound design app

I've reviewed a number of Igor Vasiliev's iOS music apps here on the blog including Audio Mastering, AltiSpace, Master FX, Master Record and SoundScaper  All these apps are excellent and deliver excellent performance combined with equally excellent value for money in a straightforward, no fuss, fashion. SoundScaper was  bit of a departure from the more conventional audio effects processing apps Igor had previously released but it proved very popular with sound designers and more experimental … [Read more...]

Elastic Drums updated – Oliver Greschke’s brilliant iOS drum app gets tweaks – and IAPs ON SALE

If you are a regular visitor to the Music App Blog you will be well be familiar with Elastic Drums from developer Oliver Greschke and Mouse On Mars. As I mentioned back in February, the app  underwent a significant update to v.2.0.  Having added support for using drum samples (via an IAP) in v.1.9, v.2.0 added Ableton Live Set Export features, re-vamped the sample import process and made further sample-based kits available via the in-app store. Oliver is, however, one of the more active iOS … [Read more...]

BeatHawk update – UVI brings some fine-tuning to their flagship iOS music app

I posted a full review of UVI's BeatHawk iOS music app here on the blog when it was first released and  I was hugely impressed with the app. I was even more impressed when UVI took the app to v.2.0 back in March and added a whole range of new features and refinements. This included iPhone support, a piano roll MIDI editor, Ableton Link and support for the app to work as an AU plugin. Yes, there are drum/groove box apps that perhaps pack in more features than BeatHawk does but I actually think … [Read more...]

Audiobus 3 updated – Audiobus gets AUv3 fine-tuning

I posted a full review of Audiobus 3 when it was released at the beginning of April. As promised by the Audiobus team, the new version had three new headline features. First, the app provides MIDI routing between compatible apps, making it easier to configure your overall arrangement of apps within a specific Audiobus project. Second, Audiobus 3 supports Audio Unit plugins as well as Audiobus and IAA compatible apps. This is obviously an important development given that AU is now making … [Read more...]

Blocs Wave updated – excellent loop-based music app gets new EQ IAP option

Since launched, Ampify's Blocs Wave has moved forward at quite a pace. The app itself, like Novation's Launchpad, is also a loop and sample-based music creation tool...   but with some feature differences that make it distinct from the LaunchPad approach. Anyway, Ampify (a spin off from Novation) have rapidly developed the Blocs Wave concept further and a number of updates have already appeared for the app adding new import features, Ableton Link support, new export features, the very … [Read more...]

DDMF updates – iOS11 tweaks for AU format iOS reverb and EQ effects from DDMF

I posted a reviews of both 6144 EQ and Envelope Reverb iOS audio effects apps from DDMF and developer Christian Siedschlag when they were first released. Both of these are very capable audio processors in their own right but, given the desire from many iOS musicians to see the AU plugin format really take hold, the fact that both were launched AU-only plugins was also of considerable interest. 6144 EQ is a AU-only format equaliser plugin whose inspiration was the highly regarded Neve 5033 … [Read more...]

Cyclop updated – Sugar Bytes bring technical tweaks to their mono synth app

When my more experiment side wants a shot at music creation, Sugar Bytes software is often where I end up. I'm fortunate enough to own some of their desktop-based instruments and effects but I think I've also got a full set of the various ports of these over to iOS. As I mentioned earlier this week with Korg, some iOS developers prefer to keep their updates few and far between (perhaps because they tend to have more comprehensive pre-release technical testing?). Sugar Bytes are in that group … [Read more...]

iTalizer updated – Numerical Audio make it two for the price of one

I given coverage to the excellent RP-1 , RF-1 and VC-1 apps from Numercial Audio developer Kai Aras here on the Music App Blog when each of these first launched. They all provide compact, but well-featured effects and are all capable of conventional and more creative treatments. They are all universal, very inexpensive and come with AU support straight out the box. What's not to like? Kai's latest app, however, is iTalizer which launched on the App Store a couple of weeks ago. today. The app … [Read more...]
