Blocs Wave goes FREE – Novation’s loop-based music app becomes a free download

Since launched, Novation's Blocs Wave has moved forward at quite a pace. The app itself, like Novation's Launchpad, is also a loop and sample-based music creation tool...   but with some feature differences that make it distinct from the LaunchPad approach. Anyway, Novation have rapidly developed the Blocs Wave concept further and a number of updates have already appeared for the app adding new import features, Ableton Link support, new export features, the very creative Slice Mode, a song … [Read more...]

Scythe update – iOS synth from Plastaq Software gets further tweaks

I reviewed Scythe from Plastaq Software here on the blog back in March 2015. Scythe is an iPad only app and that now requires iOS9.3 or later. At 3MB, it’s a download that ought to fit even on a well-stocked device. The app includes Audiobus support, IAA support (as an audio generator) and seems happy enough to receive MIDI from other sources such as a sequencer app or an external MIDI keyboard. Scythe is not the deepest iOS synth app you can find on the App Store, however, it is very capable … [Read more...]

Roadtrip time – normal service to be resumed soon….

As those of you who subscribe to the weekly email newsletter may already have read I'm on my travels as of today for a few days. As a consequence, things will be a little quieter around the website until I return....  Normal service will, however, be resumed soon...   :-) Unlike my last trip away back in January (which was to attend a family funeral), this one is a somewhat more light-hearted affair; we are getting to attend the wedding of some longstanding friends in Scotland. There is a … [Read more...]

Aleksander Mlazev AU effects review – Harmonizer, Warm Distortion and Resonator for iOS in AU format

Aleksandar Mlazev has a number of iOS music apps available on the App Store but, as yet, I don't think I've actually reviewed any of them here on the Music App Blog. Given that is has launched three new AU-based effects apps within the last few weeks, however, I thought I'd better do something about it. So, if you are, like me, doing your best to embrace the world of AU plugins under iOS, how do you fancy three new, budget-priced, AU audio effects processors to expand your collection? AU for … [Read more...]

Poison-202 update – excellent iOS synth moves to v.2.0

I reviewed Poison-202 from JimAudio soon after it was released. Poison-202 is a vintage-style iOS synth, inspired by some of the classic synths from the 80s and 90s, paying homage to the synth sounds found on tracks from The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Kraftwerk and Daft Punk amongst others. The app arrived with universal support, IAA and MIDI included (although the latter was perhaps not as fully-featured as on some iOS synth apps) and AU support was added in v.1.1 which appeared in … [Read more...]

midiFILTr-PG launched – interesting iOS MIDI ‘randomiser’ from Art Kerns

Art Kerns will be well known to regular iOS music apps users through his excellent midiSTEPs, midiLFOs and Funkbox, all of which I’ve reviewed here on the Music App Blog in the past. Art has a couple of other iOS music apps on the App Store in what's becoming a bit of a series - the mididFILTr apps - thet first two of which were aimed at Volca FM and Volca sample users. However, a third app in this series has arrived on the App Store today - midiFILTr-PG - and this might have a somewhat … [Read more...]

Midiflow Adapter launched – new Audiobus 3 MIDI compatibility utility app from Johannes Doerr

I posted a full review of Audiobus 3 just after it launched. One of the key new features of Audiobus 3 is MIDI routing; as with the audio routing options that Audiobus originally made its name with, the new version also allows you to route MIDI data between sources and destinations. This is a cool new feature and I'm sure will help a lot of iOS musicians to make a little bit more sense of these 'virtual' MIDI connections. As I also mentioned in a post, a suite of 8 MIDI utility apps from … [Read more...]

ChordFlow launched – new iOS MIDI chord sequencer app from Dmitry Klochkov

I did a round-up article a good while ago here on the Music App Blog that looked at the various ‘MIDI performance’ apps available for iOS. A couple of apps that have appeared since that article are ChordUp and Clawtar, both from developer Dmitry Klochkov. Both bring a slightly different take on the whole MIDI note creation process and I'm sure many iOS musicians could find a use for either app amongst their utility apps. Both are also available for pocket money prices. If either of these two … [Read more...]

ReSlice updated – brilliant iOS audio slicer instrument gets tweaks and SALE pricing

VirSyn are one of the software developers that have fully embraced the iOS platform. They have gradually developed a very impressive catalogue of iOS music apps many or which - Tera Synth, microTERA, Harmony Voice, Addictive Synth, Tap Delay, Emo Chorus, Posiedon Synth, Voxsyn, Arpeggist and AudioEffx, for example - I've reviewed here previously on the Music App Blog. However, I think they hit the ball out the park with their recent offering - ReSlice - and I was hugely impressed with the app … [Read more...]
