fluXpad update – MoMinstruments update their left-field take on a sample-based sequencer

I posted a review of WretchUp from the Mouse On Mars development some time ago on the blog but the team have more recently released fluXpad which the MoM team describe as a sample-based sequencer. This does come with a typical Mom twist however; you  'draw' your pattern sequences for each sound. Multiple patterns (clips?) can be sequenced within a single project and these then triggers to create a full performance. As shown in the screenshots, given the 'drawing' element, the UI can look a … [Read more...]

SeekBeats updated – synthesis-based drum machine app gets some tweaks

When it comes to sample-based virtual drum machine app, the iTunes App Store is pretty well stocked. However, if you are an electronic music producer who prefers the vibe provided by synthesised drum sound, there are perhaps somewhat fewer choices. There are a few notable candidates of which my personal favourites would be Elastic Drums, DM2 and Attack Drums, all of which I’ve reviewed here on the blog in the past. The new Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM app, while offering a streamlined feature set, … [Read more...]

MIDI Designer Pro update – Confusion Studio’s DIY MIDI design tool gets further refinements

Developer Confusion Studios are one third of the team that, not so long ago, bought us the excellent Music IO utility app. However, they also have a further utility app for the MIDI geek that has been around the App Store for considerably longer; MIDI Designer Pro. If you like the idea of customising and building your own MIDI control surfaces using your iPads touchscreen interface, then MIDI Designer Pro is going to be right up your street. I reviewed the app some time ago and was very … [Read more...]

Tera Synth updated – tweaks and new features for VirSyn’s Tera

VirSyn make some great iOS music apps...  While the current fuss amongst iOS musicians might well be about their latest release - Addictive Pro, which was updated today - top of the VirSyn tree is probably Tera Synth which I reviewed some time ago. This is a hugely impressive iPad-only synth. It is deep while remaining fairly easy to program and sounds very good indeed. VirSyn's iOS development team are obviously hard at work though....  as well as the Addictive Pro update, Tera Synth has … [Read more...]

RP-1 update – further tweaks for AU-friendly iOS delay app

I reviewed the excellent RP-1 from Numerical Audio and developer Kai Aras here on the Music App Blog when it was first launched. It provides a compact, but well-featured delay effect and is capable of both conventional and more creative treatments. RP-1 is a universal app, requires iOS9.0 or later, is a 19MB download and is priced at just UK£4.49/US$5.99. As well as launching with Audiobus and IAA support, the app also included both Ableton Link (tempo sync your delays via Link) and Audio … [Read more...]

Addictive Pro updated – VirSyn add Ableton Link support to their latest iOS synth app

VirSyn are one of the software developers that have fully embraced the iOS platform. They have gradually developed a very impressive catalogue of iOS music apps many or which - Tera Synth, microTERA, Harmony Voice, Addictive Synth, Tap Delay, Emo Chorus, Posiedon Synth, Voxsyn and Arpeggist, for example - I've reviewed here previously on the Music App Blog. I reviewed the latest addition to that lineup - the hotly anticipated Addictive Pro synth - just last week. The iPad-only app is a 40MB … [Read more...]

Moodscaper update – iOS soundscape creation app gets iOS10 tweaks

Whatever your personal take on Rob Jackson's Moodscaper app - which I reviewed when it was first released - you can't accuse Rob of slacking when it comes to development of the app and regular updates. However, after a brief pause since v.1.9.3 was released at the start of August for a bit of summer down-time, the last week has actually seen two updates in quick succession with the latest of these - v.1.9.5 - arriving on the App Store today. As suggested by the name, Moodscaper is a sort of … [Read more...]

Modstep updated – AppBC add iOS10 support to their iOS MIDI sequencer for iPad

Regular iOS music makers will be familiar with AppBC as the developer behind Studiomux and Modstep apps. The latter includes some of the Studiomux technology but also offers a fully-blown MIDI sequencer with both step sequencing and piano roll editing environments. If your music making revolves around MIDI, rather than audio recording, then Modstep is a powerful option for sequencing on your iPad. I did a full review of Modstep just after it was launched and the feature set is impressive. You … [Read more...]

Funk Drummer giveaway results – three winners of funky drum app from Luis Martinez

I’ve covered a whole bunch of different drum, percussion and groove-based apps here on the Music App Blog over the last couple of years. However, if you are after a straightforward take on ‘rock’ drums where the results are pretty much instant and song construction requires no pattern programming, then you would be hard pressed to find something better than Rock Drum Machine by developer Luis Martinez from Lumbeat. Luis also has his Afro Latin Drum Machine 2, Brazilian Drum Machine and Soft … [Read more...]
