Resampler review – Blamsoft add a third iOS AU plugin to their catalogue

A couple of months ago we saw the first signs of activity with the ‘new for iOS9’ Audio Units (AU) plugin format with MultitrackStudio for iPad becoming the first DAW/sequencer able to host AU plugins and Remaster the first AU effects plugin. Like all new (well, in this case, new to iOS at least) software technologies it is undoubtedly going to take developers some time to establish what potential AU may hold for them. It’s difficult to imagine that more effects and/or virtual instruments … [Read more...]

Elastic Drums giveaway results – five winners of Oliver Greschke’s brilliant iOS drum app

If you are a regular visitor to the Music App Blog you might well be familiar with Elastic Drums from developer Oliver Greschke and Mouse On Mars. I reviewed the app when it became available and was very impressed with the sound and feature set of the first release. The app has also had number of very useful updates since then bringing improved IAA and Audiobus support plus a number of other new features, including, in v.1.5, becoming 'universal' and offering graphical layouts that were able to … [Read more...]

Top 10 iOS music apps of 2015 – the Music App Blog selection

2015 has certainly been another eventful year of iOS music making. As ever, we have had to deal with the annual cycle of both hardware and software updates from Apple. Fortunately, the introduction of iOS9 proved to be somewhat less traumatic that the arrival of iOS8 twelve months previously. We have also seen the introduction of new iOS hardware with the obvious highlights being the first sight of 3D Touch on the new iPhones and the larger format iPad Pro. There are a few things that also … [Read more...]

Holiday sales – treat yourself to some iOS music app bargains

Just as we have all recovered from Black Friday/Cyber Monday (and are just about to get the credit card bill that went with it) along comes the Christmas holiday period. OK, so I know not everyone on the planet is actually engaged in the religious part of this particular holiday, but the holiday itself is a pretty global phenomena and the industrial world grinds to a halt for a few days. Including the App Store...  well, at least the bit of the App Store where Apple's little helpers approve … [Read more...]

Modstep launched – AppBC launch their iOS MIDI sequencer for iPad

Regular iOS music makers will be familiar with AppBC as the developer behind the Studimux app. Like Music IO, Studiomux provides a mean of streaming both MIDI and audio data between your desktop music system and your iOS music system using nothing more than your standard iOS USB/charging cable. While this technology is still relatively new, it works pretty well once you have got your head around what's required within your desktop DAW/sequencer to get the best out of it...  perhaps not quite … [Read more...]

ChordUp giveaway results – 10 winners of new iOS MIDI performance app from Dmitry Klochkov

I did a round-up article a good while ago here on the Music App Blog that looked at the various ‘MIDI performance’ apps available for iOS. If your keyboard skills are not so great, or perhaps you just don’t get on with virtual piano keyboards on a touchscreen surface, or maybe you don’t have any skills on a traditional musical instrument, apps such as Chordion, ChordPolyPad, Navichord and a number of others offer some interesting alternative ways to ‘play’ MIDI data into your virtual … [Read more...]

Praxis Beats update – Dream Engine Interactive’s drum machine gets song mode – and still on SALE

Over the last three years, I’ve looked at quite a number of drum apps here on the Music App Blog. This includes Praxis Beats from Dream Engine Interactive when the app went to v.2.0. The original iPad-only app developed a bit of a cult following, not perhaps for the comprehensive nature of its feature set (indeed, there are many drum machine apps that perhaps fair better in that regard) but because of its straightforward interface and a toolset that focussed on the creation of very precise … [Read more...]

Audiobus update – a further Audiobus update arrives on the App Store

If you are interested in the possibility of making music on an iOS device, Audiobus - despite not making any sound of its own - is about as 'must have' an app as it is possible to get. This utility app makes the whole process involved with getting various other music apps (synths, guitar amp sims, audio effects, DAWs, etc.) working together into a coherent workflow just so much easier...  seriously, if you don't own it then you really should get treatment for your masochism. I reviewed … [Read more...]
